Diversity in Australia: Race and Gender
In this course, we have worked with Australia as a diverse English-speaking country shaped by colonial history, national myths, migration, gender, race and Indigenous cultures. The focus has been on how Australian identity is constructed, challenged and negotiated through different texts and perspectives.
We have discussed questions of inclusion and exclusion, especially in relation to Indigenous Australians, language, and national belonging. The course has also focused on how English functions as a dominant language and lingua franca, and how this affects minority languages and cultural identity.
