BEING AMERICAN
BEING AMERICAN
Throughout the exploration of the general theme: "Being American" this theme has dwelled into the multifaceted nature of American identity through key texts that trace its evolution from historical roots to contemporary crises.
Collectively, the texts in this theme reveal persistent American themes of personal freedom and self-discovery and the relationship with nature, and the roots of immigration in the USA and the adaptation to social change in modern USA.
Christopher McCandless in the novel "Into the Wild" exemplifies the classic frontier spirit and an individualism, abandoning modern society for self-reliance in nature and reflecting on the the pioneer archetype. The film "Into the Wild" makes this story look like a classic American adventure.
The texts from the book "Being American" explains some of the roots of American patriotism, from immigrants starting over, and today's changing identity with globalization. Contemporary materials, however, also highlight current tensions: Charlie Kirk's activism and death in 2025 illustrate political polarization, and Trump's 2025 inaugural address emphasizes national renewal and "America First" rhetoric, and thus show how Americans today argue about freedom, politics and what the country should be.
