Forløb 7 Growing Up (værk Orphan Train) - eksamen
Undervisningsbeskrivelse - Growing Up/Orphans in Literature 3d 2025/2026 (ca. 15 moduler)
Formål: Introduktion til USA’s Orphan Train Riders og Children’s Aid Society i 1852-1930, samt analysere og perspektivere til Børns Vilkår og Børn Menneskerettighedserklæringen.
I værklæsningen af Orphan Train af Christina Baker Kline undersøges the litterære motif “Orphan” og den intertekstuelle reference til “The Victorian Orphan” as a literary motif i Anne of Green Gables, Jane Eyre og i det victorianske samfund. I forlængelse heraf diskuteres temaer som orphans and social environment, home and belonging, name and identity, childhood, child abuse growing up, og der perspektiveres yderligere til UN Child Rights.
Arbejdsform: Matrixgrupper og individuelle fremlæggelser, klassediskusion

Literary objectives:
To analyse and interpret the historical novel Orphan Train (Intertextuality, symbols, composition, title, setting, mood and atmosphere, theme, characterization of Vivian and Molly)
Explain the historical background information of the novel: The history of the Children’s Aid Society in 1854, the history of the orphan train movement from 1854-1929, Irish Immigrants to Ellis Island, The Stock Market Crash 1929, the Great Depression of the 1930s, 1940s WWII.
Explain the history of the Penobscot Indians in Maine, and the Penobscot woman Molly Molasses
Understand the Victorian Orphan or the orphan as a literary motif
Analyse and discuss the general view of childhood and history of children during the Romantic and Victorian Period
Understand the purpose of UNICEF - The United Nations Children’s Fund Convention on the Rights of the Child
Discuss children’s rights and conditions in a historical perspective
