Beskrivelse af de enkelte undervisningsforløb (1 skema for hvert forløb)
Titel 1 Inequality in the UK

This course focuses on social and economic inequality in the UK.. The sociologist Bourdieu’s concepts of economic, cultural and social capital have been touched upon, and by reading and analyzing texts from different genres, the students have studied the concept of class and the question of upward mobility.

The students have been introduced to non-fiction analysis during the course as they have worked with analysis of the communication situation and Toulmin’s theory of argumentation. The students have also worked with literary analysis as well as they have briefly been introduced to film analysis.

Titel 2 About a Boy - værklæsning

Reading the novel "About a Boy" by Nick Hornby we have been tracing the personal development of the two main characters. The students have been introduced to the genre and characteristics of Lad Lit, and we have discussed how the concept of masculinity has changed.

The prelude of the movie "About a Boy" has also been part of the course, and it gave rise to a discussion of cinematic techniques, especially the use of narrator and point of view.

In terms of literary analysis focus has been on characterization, but the students have also worked with
the core concepts: narrator, point of view, setting, theme and style.

Titel 5 The American Dream - EKSAMEN



Purpose:
To reach an understanding of some of the many ways in which it is possible to define the American Dream.

In the process of uncovering this concept, we have looked into American history to gain an understanding of:
- the dreams and values of the first settlers
- the content and importance of the Declaration of Independence
- the heritage from Martin Luther King, including his references in "I Have a Dream" to The Declaration of Independence, The Emancipation Declaration and Lincoln´s Gettysburg Address.

Having done so, we have turned our attention to different contemporary aspects of the American Dream.

Non-fiction analysis has been at the core of this topic, and special attention has been given to the analysis of speeches and their style.

Titel 8 Dublin and the fight for Independence

Frem mod klassens studietur til Dublin studerede vi Irlands historie med særlig fokus på kolonitiden, kampen for uafhængighed fra Storbritannien og den efterfølgende borgerkrig.

På selve studieturen besøgte vi Kilmainhaim Gaol og var med en irsk historiker på tur rundt i Dublin til de steder hvor uafhængighedskampen og borgerkrigen foregik. Vi brugte også en dag på at blive introduceret til “Gaelic sports” og besøge stadionet Croke Park som er indskrevet i uafhængighedskampen. Vi besøgte desuden den danske ambassade og fik et oplæg om Irland, Irlands økonomi og kultur i dag.

Titel 9 Suburbia - behind the white picket fence EKSAMEN

Opgives til eksamen

Purpose:  
to explore the rise of Suburbia and the decline in its popularity in recent years.

Focal points hace been:
the life lived in the suburb, the values and family life  
the dualism of the exterior happiness and interior unhappiness
the perception of suburbia, the myths and prejudices surrounding the concept

As part of the course on Suburbia the students have analyzed and interpreted the entire screenplay ”American Beauty” (199 ) by Alan Ball, tracing the development of the characters and the portrayal of life in the suburbs. Following the class has watched the movie American Beauty ( 1999 ) by Sam Mendes focusing on the different cinematic techniques used to emphasize the themes of the work: The generational conflict, materialism vs freedom, lost youth, and the beauty of life. The mix of genres has also been discussed.

Gennem læsning af litterære og sagprosa tekster har forløbet haft til formål at give eleverne  en grundviden om de historiske, kulturelle og samfundsmæssige forhold, der prægede  Storbritannien under Dronning Victorias regeringstid fra 1837-1901. Vi har haft fokus på industrialiseringen, den øgede velstand, rollen som kolonimagt, videnskabens rolle, familiens rolle, kønsroller, de fattiges vilkår og den særlige moral, der udviklede sig i takt med, at middelklassen kom til at spille en større rolle. Emnet "English as a global language" er blevet introduceret som en del af forløbet.

Titel 11 Macbeth - EKSAMEN

OPGIVES TIL EKSAMEN

This course introduced Shakespeare, and the students have read selected extracts of his play the tragedy Macbeth. This course set out studying an important form of writing in the Elizabethan Age: the Shakespearean sonnet to become acquainted with Shakespeare's use of language.

Focus has been on understanding the play and its characters as well as how they act in accordance to the beliefs of the Elizabethan Era.

Key concepts in this course are:
The sonnet form (including metre and rhyme scheme), metaphors, similes, hyperbole, euphemism, tragedy, tragic flaw, Shakespearean verse (blank verse, iambic pentameter).

A presentation of some central characteristics of the Elizabethan Period:

This course concentrates on postmodernism as a literary movement and on postmodernity as a social condition. The students have been familiarized with a number of theories and concepts relevant to the movement and period characteristics. The complexity of identity formation in this period has been of central concern.
