COURSE TITLE
The Land of the Second Amendment: Gun Policy in the United States (50 pages)

COURSE OBJECTIVE
This course intends to give students an introduction into the roots of the Second Amendment and specifically how gun legislation today has remained an integral part of American culture, self-perception and the American national identity. Students shall discuss both pros and cons of having such legislation. Finally, high school shootings shall also be discussed as an American phenomenon, and how mass shootings continue to leave their mark on American society today.

COURSE TITLE
”In the hood”: Portrayals of the American ‘Ghetto’ in Fiction (52 pages)

COURSE OBJECTIVE
This course sets out to teach students about various fictional responses to life in the American ghettos, both in terms of lyricism (rap and hip hop music, primarily) and the motion picture genre that emerged in the 1990s labeled the “hood film”. After discussing the definition of a so-called “ghetto” and the etymology of the word, we shall discuss how ghetto lifestyles are portrayed in the examples below, and what these texts seem to have in common as a literary “genre” of its own. The focus will focus on New York City and Los Angeles, two epicentres of African American musical cultures, especially.

COURSE OBJECTIVE
The objective of the following course it to discuss prison sociology with the students and especially how the prison experience has been presented to us in fiction. Students will be introduced a number of examples of writing by both inmate and non-inmate authors and particular emphasis shall be put on “the prison film” as a genre within motion picture history, e.g. its traits, its common formula, stereotypical character depictions etc. Also, we shall read Stephen King's novel _Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption_ and watch the film version of it as an example of said genre.
