Tales of the Fantastic: Studying “Fantasy Fiction” as a Literary Genre (80 pages)


COURSE OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to “fantasy” as a literary genre to determine its trademarks and its common themes and  motifs. Apart from an introduction on the theory pertaining to this style of literature, students shall be introduced to a number of both classic and recent examples within “fantasy”, ranging from the universes of Tolkien and Lewis to J.J. Inside Four Walls: Prison Sociology and Prison Fiction (130 pages)

COURSE OBJECTIVE
The objective of the following course it to discuss prison sociology with the students and especially how the prison experience has been presented to us in fiction. Students will be introduced a number of examples of writing by both inmate and non-inmate authors and particular emphasis shall be put on “the prison film” as a genre within motion picture history, e.g. its traits, its common formula, stereotypical character depictions etc. Also, we shall read Stephen King's novel _Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption_ and watch the film version of it as an example of said genre.

Understanding Race-Relations and the Policy of _Apartheid_ in South Africa (45 pages)

COURSE OBJECTIVE
What was _apartheid_? What was the rationale behind it? This course sets out to answer those questions. Also, we shall study South Africans such as Steve Biko who chose to resist the implementation of the policy, how South African _apartheid_ society has been portrayed in fiction, and how leaders such as Nelson Mandela articulated the transition from _apartheid_ to democracy in the 1990s. Finally, we shall see how _apartheid_ is remembered today, and how post-apartheid South Africa is viewed by both foreign journalists and South African citizens.

COURSE TITLE
”But Why will You Say that I am Mad?” Portrayals of Insanity in Fiction from the Tales of Edgar Allan Poe to David Fincher’s _Mindhunter_ (54 pages)

COURSE OBJECTIVE
This course sets out to initiate students into “insanity” or “madness” in literature and motion pictures, including examples of fiction from the 19th, 20th and 21st century. The course will include a discussion of the term “insanity”, its origins and its meaning both in a legal and psychological sense, and also how the public’s view of “insanity” has changed through the three centuries above. Moving forward chronologically, the course will include short stories by Edgar Allan Poe, modern popular culture examples of poetry on insanity, and modern takes on the psychiatric hospital as a setting (Scorsese’s _Shutter Island_). Finally, students will gain insight into the advent of the FBI’s serial killer investigation unit in the form of John Douglas’ _Mindhunter_ and David Fincher’s adaption of this book.
