We will begin our English course with a coming-of-age theme that deals with what it means to grow up, the relation to your parents and the challenges in developing from an adolescence into an adult. In doing so, we will look at different texts: short stories, poem and film to get an understanding of how we work with analysis of different genres in English.

We will look at the foundation of the United States of America and how America has been influenced by voices of different culture and colour. We will deal with the American Dream, how the expansion of the US from east to west is portraited in literature and painting and also how slavery and the consequent race segregation is dealt with in a political context and in fiction.

What does it mean to be British? We will look at British identity and the development of the British society after World War II with a focus on how immigration from the former British colonies has shaped the multicultural society of Britain today. Furthermore, we will look at literature’s role in understanding our own and other’s identity by reading short stories, an essay and a poem written by authors with different cultural background.
