Titel 1 Growing up

This first theme is an introduction to fiction and grammar. The texts below have been studies with a primary focus on inner and outer characterisation as well as some text-based grammar. Models of analysis (the iceberg model and the three-act structure (hjem-ude-hjem) have been incorporated as examples of composition and 'reading between the lines'. The main concepts introduced are: characterization, main character, protagonist/hero, antagonist/villain, round/flat characters, setting, atmosphere and documentation. The students performed in writing and orally during this introductory course.

Titel 2 The UK (exam)

This theme focuses on the UK as a geographical area, its national songs and its school system with a perspective to the American school system. Analytical skills were  a primary focus through the learning styles of listening, reading and writing as well as grammar.

Continued focus on the former grammatical areas presented under the previous theme

Titel 3 The USA and the presidential election (exam)

The theme on the USA started off by students' associations with the USA. Moving on to the presidential candidates, written exercises were based on the acceptance of the Republican presidential candidate at The National Republican Converntion, and the first presidential debate between Trump and Harris with at political focus on abortion. The course furthermore introduced students to the basic knowledge on the states, (the number of American states as well as their locations on a map). As a part of the independent, written work in class. political songs were analysed and concepts applied. As a part of the oral work, each member of the class made an oral presentation on one of the above-mentioned songs.

Genres: documentary,  poetry (political songs), and non-fiction texts.

Academic focus:  language and rhetorical devices, including the following terms: complex and simple language, informal and formal language, rhyme, metaphor, simile and theme.

A great didactical focus has been vocabulary build-up, task-based exercises for each text and video and Quizlets and Kahoots on terms and topics.

Titel 4 SoMe and fake news

The focus of this theme is on the pros and cons of social media, fake news and how to determine reliable news, Further more the theme starts the preperation of the small academic paper that must be written at the end of the term.


Academic focus: evaluating
-  reliable news: authority, purpose, objectivity, currency, reliability,
- fake news: intentionally deceptive, jokes taken at face value, hoaxes, slanted reporting of facts and stories where the truth is arguable, digital footprints and what we learn from Greek mythology concerning: Narcissus, Sisyphos, Atalanta and Orpheus.


Didactic focus: questionaires, quizlets and task-based exercises to initiate dialogue and reflection plus vocabulary work. The theme was concluded with a small project on the U. S. presidential election and Trump's request to buy Greenland. The themes ended with a cross-curricular project on abortion, together with the academic subjects of Danish, social studies and biology where the subject of English focused on fake (misinformation) vs. reliable  sources.

Titel 5 The criminal mind

This theme is very short and has the purpose to motivate academic studying based on students' interests. The theme fell on 'the criminal mind' and students had the options of studying either fictional or non-fictional characters. During the project the focus was on vocabulary work, task D of the grammatical exam task, reading, writing, dialogue and oral presentation .

Key terms: psychopath, mitigating circumstances, vicious, premeditated, compassion, vicious, offender, acquit, mental, sanity and insanity.

Titel 6 Graphic novels

This theme explores the graphic novel and its devices. The focus is on different formats as a general introduction, the genres of graphic novels and the terms used to open up for analysis and interpretation. The theme also builds up to the first year assignment of 5-8 pages and has been in multidiciplinary collaboration with Danish. The collaboration with Danish also sets the ground work for students to write their first year assignment in the Danish language as required by the establishment.

Key terms: single and double page spreads, panels, 4th wall breaks (or bleeds), splash page gutter, colours, perspectives, shots, closure, easter egg, sound (onomatopoeia) and movement (emanata), speech/thought balloons and caption box.

Titel 7 Teenage voices and life (exam)

The theme explores teenage voices within the topics of climate change, freedom of speech and personality traits by looking at point of view, narration, characterization, visiual effects in film (genre, framing, angles and lighting), ethos, logos, pathos and the rhetorical pentagon in general as well as the level of discussion.
Regarding grammar the focus has been on a recap on simple vs. progressive tense and working with adjectives, adverbs and the definite article,
The main purpose of the written assignments has evolved around practicing grammatical tests (delprøve 1) and exam-like delprøve 2-assignments for literary analysis on climate change (non-fiction)  and an extract from 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time' (fiction).

Titel 8 Going Global - with sport (exam)

The theme explores the influence of colonialism on the colonized identities and what happens to a culture when another set of social, political and cultural values shape identities. Stream of consciousness as a narrative mode was introduced as well as its purpose . The significance of sport was studied in the majority of texts. 'Shooting an Elephant' was used as practice for the oral exam. Grammar, preparations for the written mock exam as well as the actual oral and written exam were practiced as a part og the theme.

Terms related to the theme: imperialism, monocentrism/ethnocentrism, universal idea, cultural relativism, superior, inferior, colonizer and the colonized.

Learning methods: small presentations in groups, plenum dialogue and written work.
