Titel 1 Identity

The theme has an introductory purpose regarding reading and analysis of the genres short stories and poetry, focusing on narration, characterization, main character/protagonist, setting, symbolism, intertextuality and vocabulary work tied to the theme 'identity'. Dictionaries and AI have been introduced as generative tools of process for understanding and presentation.
Introduced teory for analyses includes 'The Iceberg Model' with reference to 'minimalism' as a literary genre.

The theme was concluded with some work on and understanding of the US presidential election: the Demcratic and Republican parties, policies on abortion (prolife vs. pro-choice), the political (the branches of government) and electoral systems of The USA.

Concerning the analysis of pictures the importance of vertical, horizontal and dialogal lines as well as the importance of perspective (bird's eye, worm's eye and normal perspective) was introduced.

With respect to grammar, the class have worked with word class and an introduction to their purpose (nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs), verbs and their tense (the present, past, present, perfect and past perfect), the forms of regular and irregular verbs, the genitive and the use of apostrophes with the genitive and contractions and capitalization.

The work with texts and grammar alternates among the following didactics and styles of learning: individual, pair and group work; written and oral presentations in groups as well as individual work.

The written work has introduced summary and analysis of Swift's and West's political songs with the concepts related to the theme 'identity': syntax, formal and informal language, rhyme, methaphor and simile.

Titel 2 The American Dream (exam)

The theme  started off by presenting the idea of the American Dream and the history connected to American culture and immigration. The class have been working with  basic history, the presidential election, The USA as an American Dream for immigrants, some basic history on The First Nations and the Black population of former slaves and the history of segregation. Throughout the sub-themes further genres have been introduced and worked with. The theme has been combined or alternated with grammar work.

Genres: fictional film and documentary, short stories, poetry and non-fiction.

Literary tools and terms in focus: Push and pull factors of immigration, ethnocentrism and cultural relativism, repatriation, prejudice, stereotypes, segregation, lynching, characterization, narrator, styles of narration (four basic steps), point of view, plot, intertextuality, language, styles of writing and rhetorical devices.

Keywords to The American Dream (The Declaration of Independence and The Bill of Rights): Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Equal opportunity of success, individualism, democratic rights: freedom of speech, freedom from want, freedom from fear, freedom of worship,

A didactical focus has been vocabulary build-up and, at the very beginning of the theme and role-play presentation.

Alternation between grammar and literary work along with text based grammar.

Titel 3 The UK (exam)

Focus on the UK as a geographical area and social class. Films and audio have been used in order to make a proper introduction to different British dialects, national pride through national songs, the UK class system and the school system. Regarding the British school system students have worked with documentaries presenting the difference in culture between state and public schools. The theme has been evaluated through literary assignments, project work and oral presentations. The theme has been combined or alternated with grammar work.

Literary focus has been on poetry, fiction and non-fiction and their devices for analysis in general.

Terms introduced: poverty index, inequality, culture stigma, social hierarchy, self-esteem, career opportunities, and more.

Titel 4 The Gothic Universe (exam)

Gothicism introduces the 'abnormal' vs. normality and the dark sides to the human mind. Gothic devices (mystery, terror, trapdoors, battlement, unknown territories, desolate places, dark atmosphere and its reference to medieval times) have been introduced and work with.

Theoretical focus: the psycological and socio-cultural readings, the archetypes of gothic fiction, the five stages of grief and the means of social control.

Literary focus: the style of writing, (un)reliable narrator, omniscience, limited omniscience, intertextuality, suspense (climax and the point of no return), character development, the doppelgänger, tone, atmosphere, symbolism and message.

Titel 5 Going Global (exam)

The theme explores the influence of colonialism on colonized identities and what  happens to a culture when another set of social, political and cultural values are forced upon collective identities. Stream of consciousness as a narrative mode was introduced and its purpose analysed.

Terms related to the theme: imperialism, pseudo-science, monocentrism/ethnocentrism, universal idea, cultural relativism, superior, inferior, colonizer, colonized and postcolonialism.
