Crime in Fiction
This theme explores crime in fiction through working with a variety of text types. Using the background chapter providing information as to what characterizes the genre, the students have been exposed to classical crime fiction, e.g. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Sherlock Holmes) and Stephen King. Titel 2 Global Britain - Everyone is Here (EXAM)

This theme focuses on the development of Britain into its status today as a superdiverse and, to some extent, convivial society. Firstly, the theme looks briefly - as a backdrop - at Britain as a colonial power. Then follows an introduction to the Windrush Generation including background reading, a letter representing the immigrants from former colonies arriving in Britain in the 50s, and a film dealing with the recent Windrush Scandal. The next part centers on the concept “White Privilege”. The concept is introduced through background reading and two short stories.
Additionally, we've looked at the influence the British Empire had on English becoming the lingua franca. Finally, the terms “superdiversity” and “conviviality” are dealt with using background reading and an analysis of both a poem and a song/music video.

Titel 3 The US - a Nation United/Nation Divided? (EXAM)

Titel 4 Victims or Villains (EXAM)

This course takes its point of departure in the refugee crisis which began in 2015 and draws a parallel to the refugee flow we have experienced after the war in Ukraine. Via newspaper articles, a short story, a personal essay and a novel, its aim is to examine the complex ways in which refugees are represented, that is, how they are described and depicted, and how such representations are always bound up with power and politics. More specifically for example in the contrast between the two UK papers The Daily Mail and The Observer. Consequently, students are encouraged to take into consideration how representation is always by somebody, about somebody, and to somebody and thus never neutral or (ideologically) innocent. Finally, the course aims to shed light on the morality of (seemingly) bystanders in the conflict via the representation of the main character in the novel The Optician of Lampedusa.
