Titel 3 Crime fiction and true crime

Crime is one of the most popular genres of fiction and documentary today. The number of books, films, and tv-series about crime, investigation, and punishment being published continues to rise ever higher! During this course, you will explore how the genres of Crime Fiction and True Crime have developed since the 19th century. You will learn about the formal requirements of the genre, how the detective figure has shifted over time from a single professional investigator to a team of experts. You will reflect on such questions as: What social purpose do crime stories serve? What do they make people feel about their lives and the world they live in?

As you engage with a number of crime stories and cases in this course, you will gain an understanding of some of the key tools and methods for the analysis of fiction and non-fiction. You will also learn to place texts in the historical and cultural context in which they were produced.

Titel 5 Global Britain

This course focuses on the development of Britain into its status today as a superdiverse and, to some extent, convivial society. Firstly, the theme looks briefly - as a backdrop - at Britain's migration history. Then follows an introduction to the Windrush Generation including background reading, a letter representing the immigrants from former colonies arriving in Britain in the 50s, and a film dealing with the recent Windrush Scandal. The next part centers on invisible forms of racism. Central concepts are introduced through background reading, a short story, an article, and a short film. Finally, the terms “superdiversity” and “conviviality” are dealt with using background reading and an analysis of two poems and a song/music video.

Titel 6 Refugees and The Optician of Lampedusa

This course takes point of departure in the refugee crisis. Via newspaper articles and the novel, The Optician of Lampedusa, its aim is to examine the complex ways in which refugees are represented, that is, how they are described and depicted, and how such representations are always bound up with power and politics, for example in the contrast between the two UK papers The Daily Mail and The Observer. Consequently, students are encouraged to take into consideration how representation is always by somebody, about somebody, and to somebody and thus never neutral or (ideologically) innocent. The course also aims to shed light on the morality of (seemingly) bystanders in the conflict via the representation of the main character in the novel The Optician of Lampedusa. The students work intensively with chapters 1-6 and extensively with chapters 7-12 in the novel. In the end of the course, the students work independently with presentations covering different focuses of the theme.

Titel 7 India then and now

India course description:
This theme explores India both historically and today. We work on India’s history both before and after independence and partition and develop an understanding of the way the British see themselves in relation to the colonies through George Orwell: “Burmese Days” and Rudyard Kipling: “The White Man’s Burden”.
Turning to India today, we are introduced to gender issues and the caste system, and we focus on young Indians' struggle for love and/or wealth. During the course we also discuss English as a lingua franca. Finally, we see how the colonial past still plays a role in India when we look at the way language is used as a postcolonial identity marker.
