Titel 1 Stories with a Twist

This topic is an introduction to reading short stories. All the stories examined have a twist at the end. We examined terms such as conflict, climax and resolution and how suspense is created.
The focus was on learning relevant analytical terms and learning how to analyze short stories.

Titel 2 People who changed the world

This topic focused on people who made a difference to the world in some way. We especially focused on how these people engaged an audience through public speaking.  The students chose their own person to work with.
In class we examined texts by/about  Barack Obama and  Malala Yousafzai, and watched the movie: The Great Debaters. The students did individual projects in which they chose a person who made a difference. In addition, they wrote their own speeches using rhetorical devices that we learned about.
Objectives: To learn about what makes a good speaker.
To learn about rhetorical devices and public speaking.
To practice public speaking.

Titel 3 American Values and the American Dream

This topic dealt with American ideals and values and examined literature, film, articles and speeches dealing with these values. The topic was fairly long as it was designed to help the students understand some of the key issues of the American election and growing polarization in the USA. The topic dealt with The American Dream with a particular focus on the immigrant dream of America.

Titel 4 The mind of a murderer (exam topic)

What leads people to commit murder? How can point of view help us to understand the mind of a murderer? The main focus was on literary analysis-in particular, the role of the narrator and the creation of suspense.
The students read My Friend Dahmer on their own and prepared an oral (taped) analysis of  the novel.

Titel 5 Inequality in the USA (exam topic)

Dette emne blev brugt til klassens SRO-opgave i samarbejde med samfundsfag. Fokus var på analyse af fiktion, samt non-fiktion tekster. Derudover var der fokus på filmanalyse. I samarbejde med samfundsfag, skulle klassen får et indblik i de store forskelle i det amerikanske samfund. Klassen læste bogen "Dear Justyce" som skulle inddrages. Derudover skulle de inddrage mindst en anden af de læste tekster. Der blev sat fokus på formalia-krav til SRO og opbygningen af en større skriftlig opgave, samt fagenes metoder og basale videnskabsteori. Til SRO var der nogle der fokuserede på økonomisk ulighed, hvorimod andre havde fokus på raceulighed.

Titel 6 British Identity (exam topic)

In this topic, students have explored the theme of British identity with a focus on how identity, belonging, and cultural diversity are shaped and challenged in contemporary Britain. Through a combination of fiction, non-fiction, and multimodal texts, students have examined how migration, integration, terrorism, racism, and political developments such as Brexit have influenced the modern understanding of Britishness.

The aim of the course has been to develop students’ analytical skills and their ability to relate texts to British culture and society, while also strengthening their intercultural understanding and critical thinking. Throughout the course, students have worked with both oral and written skills through analysis, discussion, debate, and reflection.
Approximately 60 pages.

Titel 7 Travellers (including Lingua Franca) (exam topic)

This topic was preparation for our trip to Barcelona. The topic included learning about Lingua Franca, Career learning and as part of the process the students had to write a job application to a real business in Barcelona.
In addition, the students learned about Travel Vlogs, so that they could create their own in Barcelona. Furthermore, they prepared travel brochures about different areas in Barcelona. The focus was on language proficiency and communication.

The topic continued the following year in connection with a student trip to Berlin. The focus here was on the role of the United States in Berlin during the Cold War. In this connection we examined Reagan's famous "Tear Down This Wall Speech" and read an article written by the man who wrote the speech many years later. In this article, we see his reflections on language, the situation, and what was "acceptable" to talk about.

Titel 8 Crime Stories



This topic will focused on the crime story as a genre. We examined elements of the detective story starting with Sherlock Holmes.
We examined different types of crime stories and different kinds of detectives. The focus was primarily on analyzing fiction; however it also included a look at the Victorian age and its most notorious serial killer, Jack the Ripper.
In connection with the topic, the students read the novel, "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime."  As exam preparation, the students prepared an analytical podcast about the novel.

Titel 10 Mental Health (including Shakespeare) exam topic

This topic examined texts dealing with mental health.
Most of the texts were fiction; however, non-fiction was also dealt with. The focus of this topic was literary analysis and how mental health was depicted in the various texts.
The students also prepared a mental health awareness campaign.

The topic also included excerpts from Shakespeare's Hamlet and Macbeth. Here, the focus was on the theme of madness in both plays.

Titel 11 I'm Sorry (Canada and Australia) exam topic

This topic focused on apologies--in particular, official apologies to the Canadian indigenous people and the aboriginal people of Australia. We also examined how the indigenous people of Canada and Australia were affected by the policies and actions of their respective countries.
We learned about different strategies that can be used to apologize and dealt with relevant vocabulary. The students practiced writing their own apologies.
Several different apologies were analyzed, focusing on the different strategies and the use of rhetorical devices.
In addition, the students found their own examples of public apologies and examined the strategies employed.
