Titel 1 American Ways

We will talk about American history, values and beliefs. The American Dream is analysed, and focus is on how it is reflected in American lives. Why do the Americans believe in 'The American Dream', and what does independence mean to the Americans? The American political system will be covered in this theme as well.
We will also address the issue of racism and look closer into slavery and the racial segregation of the 1950 and 1960s. Besides reading some of the pages in American Ways (I'll give you a compendium with the relevant texts and articles) we watch YouTube clips and the film: ‘12 years a slave’ (2013).

To finish our topic about the USA, you willl make a presentation about a topic of your own choice, however, related to aspects within the USA. You base your presentations on several articles, film clips as well as texts dealt with in class.

Titel 3 Battle of Beliefs

This topic tries to unfold how people have quite different opinions on how earth was created. We focus on both creationism (mainly in the USA) and the theory of evolution. Also, emphasis is put on the ‘theory’ of intelligent design and how some people, today, believe that creationism should be taught alongside evolution. The topic allows us to discuss the different views and relate the beliefs of Americans, in the so-called Bible Belt, to our American Ways topic earlier this year.

Titel 6 Serial Killers (exam topic)

In this course we've focused on the phenomenon of serial killers in America. We have worked with different approaches to recognizing serial killers, as well as how their respective minds function differently from ordinary citizens. We have looked at several statistics to elucidate what a serial killer normally looks like (sex, ethnicity, where they operate etc), and have also used relevant theory on how to distinguish them from one another.

We have worked with a compendium that lists several tasks, where the students have primarily worked in groups, and then we have summed up the analyses in class discussions. However, there has also been student presentations, and web quests.

During the course, we've both read relevant articles, stories and theory, but have majorily watched videos, trailers and movies on the subject.

Approximately 30 pages.

Texts:
- "Sociopath v. Psychopath: What is the difference?" (Kara Mayer Robinson)
- "Exploring the mind of a killer" (Jim Fallon), TED talk, 2009.
- "Introduction to the psychology of Serial Murder", (Holmes R, De Burger, J), 1988.
- "Serial Murder", from the FBI website.
- "The four types of Serial Killers"
- "The differences between Organized and Disorganized serial killers."
- "The Tell-Tale Heart", Edgar Allan Poe (1843).

Titel 7 American Literary Minimalism (exam topic)

In this course we've focused on the American minimalist writing style of Ernest Hemingway and Raymond Carver. We've elucidated the writing style itself and done close readings of selected works by the aforementioned writers in order to investigate how this style works. We've also practiced the notion of reading through the lines, and how to apply Hemingway's Iceberg Theory.

We've worked with reading alone and in groups, and have also done several oral and written tasks, where students have practiced analysis, presentation, and interpretation.

One of our main focus points in the course have been for the students to practice recognizing traits of not only minimalism as a written genre, but also traits of Hemingway and Carver on their own respectively.

Texts:
- "A Very Short Story" E. Hemingway (1925)
- "Cat in the rain" E. Hemingway (1925)
- "Tell the women we're going" R. Carver (1981)
- "Hills like White Elephants" E. Hemingway (1927)

Titel 8 Love and Marriage (exam topic)

A look at love and marriage in life and literature. This topic examines texts from a number of literary periods (for example post-modernism), where our focus has been on literary analysis. We have also practiced examining an author's background to learn about how that person writes and how these traits are present in their stories (Shakespeare, and reference to Hemingway in our other course on "American Literary Minimalism").

We've also elucidated different types of love, and how they are relevant in the texts we've read. This topic also included Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The students read three scenes from Acts 1 + 2. When we've seen a scene, we have usually also seen a theater production of the scene, in order to better visualize the plot and performance. In addition we have watched clips from different versions of Romeo and Juliet, for instance Gnomeo and Juliet and Romeo + Juliet. In a more modern context, we also saw and analyzed a modern example of love in Damien Chazelle's "La La Land".

We have focused on why Shakespeare is still popular today, why we continue to study Shakespeare in school, and why actors and film-makers continue to produce new versions of Shakespeare's plays. In Romeo and Juliet, we read the prologue, Act 1 scene 3, Act 1 scene 5 and Act 2 scene 2. We've also on occasion attempted to rewrite Shakespeare to a more modern setting, where the students have used their analytical toolbox, imagination, and textual knowledge to do so.

The topic included a look at arranged marriage (India) and forced marriage (Lingua Franca/global issue). In this connection we examined the work of the United Nations to stop child marriages.

Texts:
- "Happy Endings", M. Atwood, 1983.
- "The English Handbook", T. Østergaard, 2017. (Lingua Franca)
- "Is arranged marriage really any worse than Craigslist?", A. Jain, 2005.

- "I married a total stranger", A. Mansukhani, 2007.

Titel 9 Horror fiction and the gothic (exam topic)

In this course, we have analyzed gothic horror as a genre with a focus on British (and Irish) literature. Students worked with Gothic Horror and Fiction with a focus on genre characteristics, historical context, and literary analysis.

We began by introducing key features of Gothic fiction, including setting, atmosphere, themes, and typical character traits, as well as different theoretical approaches to why we crave horror (the biological, psychological, and socio-cultural approaches respectively).

Students explored the Victorian Age as an important context for understanding the genre. The course was structured around three central Gothic archetypes: the Scientist, the Vampire/Demon, and the Psychopath. These were studied through stories such as "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde", "Dracula", and "The Tell-Tale Heart" (although the latter is not a British text, and was primarily used for analysis and reference to our other course earlier this year on "Serial Killers").

Activities included close reading, vocabulary exercises, class discussions, and analytical writing, with a focus on identifying Gothic elements and using relevant terminology. Students also engaged in creative tasks, such as rewriting scenarios, producing rhetorical texts, and writing their own Gothic stories.

The course emphasized the interaction between analysis and production, enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge in their own writing. It concluded with presentations and reflections on what makes Gothic horror effective and why the genre remains relevant today.

Texts:
- "The Gothic Universe", Marianne Mortensen & Rolf Erbst (2003 - Course book on Systime)
- "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde", Robert Louis Stevenson (1886) (excerpt)
