Titel 2 Globalisation

We'll talk about globalisation and 'when it began'. What does globalisation mean, and which role does national identity play in globalisation in our world today. We'll read different articles dealing with the pros and cons of globalisation. This short theme is a sort of introduction for the next theme: Clash of cultures.

Titel 3 Clash of cultures

Elaborating on our theme about globalisation, we will, in this theme, read some texts that illustrate the 'clash of cultures' that sometimes occur when different sets of value and traditions collide. Globalisation makes the world bigger and smaller at the same time, but issues such as cultural appropriation, prejudice and cultural heritage are sometimes challenged. Besides reading articles, we will read some short stories that deal with clash of cultures.
Many small written assignments will be included in the theme - ranging from analysis assignments to reflective assignments, just as oral presentations and debates will be included.
We'll finish our theme by directing our attention towards the US election and look at the American values presented by the two candidates. America is an odd mix of cultures, not only people from different countries, but also cultures within the US. A few articles read in class will help us understand the cultural clashes we see within the States.

Titel 4 London/UK - social study (study trip kick off)

This short theme is meant to prepare the students for the upcoming study trip to London. We take a short look at England, we will focus on London, primarily, and we'll talk about the social classes, racial inequality, demography, poverty, gangs, the school system and discuss the pros and cons of being a London resident. Some of the videos we will watch together in class, and some articles will be homework. Also, we will talk about CCTV (briefly) and the ethics concerning surveillance.

Titel 5 Surveillance + VÆRK-Stephen King

We'll work with surveillance as a topic. We'll both address it from its 'original' dystopic meaning as depicted in eg. 1984 by Orwell, but also take it to modern time with Cambridge Analytics and algorithms that monitor our activity on social media. A combination of texts going from articles to video clips/interviews and fiction will be included to cover the theme properly. I have gathered all the links and texts in a compendium titled 'Surveillance'. Written assignments will be made alongside the oral debates in class. The three surveillance areas are:
-Classical surveillance
-CCTV
-Dataveillance

Titel 6 Intelligence - in all its shapes + AI (2 forløb)

This theme consists of two phases - and covers two topics:
Topic one: 'Regular' intelligence  
Topic two: AI and robots

Working with the first theme, we'll define what intelligence really is. We'll work with Howard Gardner's definition and combine his ideas with our own notions of intelligence. We'll trace the historical definitions of intelligence and the different ways of measuring it.

The 2nd phase of our work with intelligence - topic two - will focus on AI as it is a special brand of intelligence. Seeing that we use AI in many ways during the day - going from Siri on our phones to our personalized internet research -  it is relevant to address the fears many people hold regarding AI. Will we end up being controlled by AI and will it slowly take away our jobs and our control in general?
We'll read a variety of short stories, articles and listen to TED talks in order to get a thorough understanding of intelligence - in all its shapes.

The students will get 2 compendiums: Intelligence Part 1 ('normal' intelligence) and Intelligence part 2 (AI)
