Full title: Communication: Understanding and misunderstanding: Exam topic:

The focus of this topic was on how and why misunderstandings occur in various situations. The topic examined misunderstandings in literature and "real life". In addition, we examined misunderstandings from a cultural and linguistic perspective. We examined how using English as a lingua franca forces us to consider how misunderstandings might occur. The topic included texts from different literary periods such as modernism (Hemingway) and postmodernism. We paid special attention to point of view and the unreliable narrator.
The topic dealt with analysis of fiction and non-fiction texts as well as film.

Titel 2 Gender Issues (Exam topic)

The objective of the this topic was to examine gender in a modern perspective in the English speaking world--including the social media. We examined fiction and non-fiction texts and studied episode 3 of the series Adolescence. The topic focused on how and why gender is a widely debated issue, and how it is dealt with. The topic focused on language, rhetoric and film analysis.

Titel 3 Love and Marriage:Til Death do us Part(exam topic)

A look at love and marriage in life and literature.
This topic examines texts from a number of literary periods such as
Late 19th century American literature/realism , modernism and postmodernism.
The focus was on literary analysis and comparative analysis; however non-fiction texts were also dealt with.
The topic included a look at arranged marriage (India) ) and we read a collection of short stories about Arranged Marriage.. Our topic about Shakespeare and Romeo and Juliet (The Elizabethan Age) was closely related to this topic and could be dealt with in connection with it.

Titel 4 Crime Stories (exam topic)



This topic focused on the crime story as a genre.
We examined different types of crime stories and different kinds of detectives. The focus was primarily on analyzing fiction; however it also included a look at the Victorian age and its most notorious serial killer, Jack the Ripper. The students prepared short presentations about the Victorian Age.  In connection with Jack the Ripper, we learned about True Crime as a genre.

Titel 5 Romeo and Juliet (exam topic)

Although this was a topic on its own, it can be closely related to our love and marriage topic. We focused on why Shakespeare is still popular today,why we continue to study Shakespeare in school, and why actors and film-makers continue to produce new versions of Shakespeare's plays. We focused primarily on different kinds of love in Romeo and Juliet; however violence was also examined. We read scenes from Act 1 and Act 2 but focused on The Prologue Act 1, scene 5 and Act 2, scene 2. The students analyzed individual scenes from Act 1 and 2 in which they examined:
-characters/character development
-themes
-figurative language/imagery
-writing style
We watched Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet and different versions of The Balcony Scene.
