Titel B Different Worlds

Titel D Social Media

Introduction: Discussion about Cyber manners (Social Media - a distraction from education or a benefit"?)

Titel J Sex and Gender

Sex and gender issues seem to have become more visible in the media and in fiction lately and we examine some examples of these issues.
At first we focused on non-fiction and argumentation + rhetorical tools and on how to argue in a respectful way. Towards the end of this course we worked with fiction which deals with the theme of gender and sex.
Vocabulary: options, biological sex, gender identity, chromosomes, non-binary, inter-sex people, genitalia, transgender person, transsexual, sex and gender binary, LGBTQ+, discriminate, gay, homosexual, abnormal, normal, gender norms, shame, acceptance, labels, boxes, vagina, testicles, tolerance/tolerant, transformation, body, surgery, lack of understanding, ignorance, queer, self-identify as…, heteronormativity, norms.

Methods and rhetorical tools: The rhetorical pentagon, Toulmin’s model of argumentation + power point on different types of arguments. Style of language. Written vs spoken language. Analysis of poetry (ARTWARS), analysis of short stories (The CAIP approach).

Titel K Shakespeare's Hamlet

We have worked with Shakespeare’s play Hamlet. We have focussed on drama as a genre and made simple drama exercises to remind us that drama is actually not meant to be read. Instead it is meant to be interpreted in order to be performed in theatre stages (or in movies). We also look at Shakespeare’s time and become familiar with his works and typical themes. In connection with Hamlet, we have looked at: language: imagery, figures of speech: metaphor, simile, personification, Shakespeare’s verse: blank verse, prose, rhyming couplets, themes, Shakespeare’s time/The Renaissance/The Great Chain of Being, tragedy/revenge tragedy/tragic hero/the tragic flaw. We have also explored what frightened people in Shakespeare’s time, to understand how the play might have been scarier to an Elizabethan audience than to a present-day audience. Also the language used in Shakespeare’s time has been explored.

Titel L American Culture and Values

American Culture and Values

We try to understand the culture of the United States of America, especially by reading about the six American values and afterwards by seeing how these are reflected in other texts (non-fiction + fiction). And, of course, we work with the concept of “the American Dream.” As America is a nation based on immigration, we also take a brief look at how immigrant life in the US is portrayed in texts and films. We have also had a brief look at the situation of black Americans, just as we have briefly explored the situation of the Native Americans in the US. The creation of the United States and the present political system and its parties have also been studied, just as the American electoral system has been studied in connection with the American 2020 Election.

Titel M New Zealand - from a postcolonial perspective

New Zealand – from a postcolonial perspective

English culture and the English language came into contact with a wide range of cultures and languages as the British Empire grew larger and larger. As the English colonized many areas of the world, their culture and language became the dominant one, placing indigenous and minority cultures and languages at the bottom of the social and cultural hierarchy. Literature from England’s former colonies often deals with the legacy of a colonial history. We focus on New Zealand and look at how fiction portrays the cultural encounter between the Maoris and the Pakehas and how Maori writers use English to develop new positive Maori identities which suit the multi-cultural reality they live in.
We have also talked about the two dispersals of English to understand the different ways in which English has become an important language outside of England. English as a lingua Franca (English used when people who are communicating do not share the same native language) has briefly been touched upon.
Post-colonial Theory/Criticism has also been introduced to show the students how to approach literature using a type of theory especially relevant to this kind of literature. We have looked at literature written by both the colonizers and by postcolonial writers. Important PC terms have been: internalization, appropriation, centre/margin, marginalization, hybridity, writing back at the centre, colonial mindset, colonize/decolonize the mind, representation, the Other/othering, double colonization etc.
To show how postcolonial criticism is one kind of criticism out of many, the students have been briefly introduced to other kinds of literary criticism such as feminist/ Marxist/ historicist criticism.
