Titel 1 Halloween (6 sider)

We explored Halloween by acquiring knowledge about the background and traditions. The students  practiced vocabulary relevant when talking about Halloween. The students worked with some elements of film analysis and worked with adjectives and semantic fields.

Small excerpts from Horror movies which deal with Halloween:
American Horror Story
Trick’r Treat (2007)
Halloween (1978) – “The Opening Kill.”

Small excerpt from Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Because the school had a week called “Fem fede dage” we also worked with the programme: “Fashion’s Dirty Secret” BBC, 2019.  The students discussed the message and the tools used to get the message across. Finally the talked about how they personally felt about the programme and about solutions to the problem.

Titel 2 Setting out In Life /Growing Up (50 sider)

Titel 3 Boarding School Life and Class in Britain -EKSAMEN

Emnet fortsættes i 2g hvor vi bl.a. kobler fantasy elementerne til ”setting, characers, themes, composition  og cinematic techniques” da vi arbejde med The Chronicles of Narnia – The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.”

Assignment 4: analyse af sproglig stil blev trænet. Eleverne skrev et analytisk essay om The Gilded Ones, hvor de skulle fokusere på ”the main character and elements of fantasy” og følgende fagtermer skulle inddrages: point of view, setting og conflict.

We also made a quick attempt at a biographical, a new historical and a feminist reading of The Gilded Ones.

Titel 5 American Culture and Values - EKSAMEN

Beskrivelse:
We try to understand what the American Dream is and examine how it is connected to the culture of the United States of America, especially by reading about the six American values and afterwards by seeing how these are reflected in fiction and non-fiction.. In connection with the National Climate Day we read about “the heritage of abundance” and watched a program about the largest private home in the US and discussed how the American Dream and the six traditional American values and sustainability do not necessarily go hand in hand.  Since this was also the year of the presidential election in the US, we have also worked with the American presidential election: we took a look at how the US election works, the left and right in American politics, the two presidential candidates and we analyzed a Kamala Harris speech. We also looked into book ban debate and the abortion debate, which were some of the topics debated in connection with the election. In connection with the abortion debate we used Toulmin’s model to analyze the argumentation used by the pro-life and the pro-choice movements (claim, grounds and warrant).
As a part of this theme, we have also examined at how Native Americans have experienced and experience life in America and their access to the American Dream. The students get a brief introduction to the history of Native Americans and then they work with a poem, an article, a novel,  a documentary, and a TV-series written/directed by and about Native Americans. They also learn about the stereotypes that Native Americans meet in American Society.

Titel 6 Sex and Gender - EKSAMEN

Beskrivelse:
In both the UK and the US Sex and gender issues have become more and more visible in the media and in fiction lately and we explore some of these issues by working with non-fiction and fiction, among other things the issue of biological sex (is it binary or a continuum). When working with non-fiction focus is on argumentation, rhetorical devices and on how to argue in a respectful way. We have also analysed a short story, a poem, an episode of a TV series, and an excerpt from a novel, which all deal with the theme of sexuality in different ways.
Vocabulary: options, biological sex, gender identity, chromosomes, non-binary, inter-sex people, genitalia, transgender person, transsexual, sex and gender binary, LGBTQ+, discriminate, gay, homosexual, abnormal, normal, gender norms, shame, acceptance, labels, boxes, vagina, testicles, tolerance/tolerant, transformation, body, surgery, lack of understanding, ignorance, queer, self-identify as….
During this theme the class has been Introduced to queer theory. We finished off the theme by reading about consent and then the students made dilemmas and questions for each other that were relevant to the theme of Sex and Gender.
When we read excerpts from” Only this Beautiful Moment”, the class was divided into three large groups. Each group read one chapter and presented their chapter to the other groups in a creative way, focusing on narrative perspective, characterization and setting. The purpose was among other things, to talk about the effects of the narrative technique used in the novel.

Titel 7 Cultural Encounters – NZ and the Māori

Cultural Encounters – New Zealand and the Māori

English culture and the English language came into contact with a wide range of cultures and languages as the British Empire grew larger and larger. As the English colonized many areas of the world, their culture and language became the dominant one, placing indigenous and minority cultures and languages at the bottom of the social and cultural hierarchy. Literature from England’s former colonies often deals with the legacy of a colonial history. We focus on New Zealand and look at how fiction portrays the cultural encounter between the Māori and the Pakehas and how Māori writers use English to develop new positive Māori identities which suit the multi-cultural reality they live in. We also look at some articles and a documentaries that tell su something about the situation of the Maõri today.

We have also talked about the two dispersals of English to understand the different ways in which English has become an important language outside of England. English as a lingua franca has also been looked at.

During this theme the students have learned about lingua franca.

https://abc.ordbogen.com

Engelsk-engelsk ordbøger:
Oxford Advanced Dictionary (brit):  https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/
Merriam-Webster Dictionary:  https://www.merriam-webster.com/
The Free Dictionary:  http://www.thefreedictionary.com/

Ordbøger med synonymer:

OBS!

Her gælder samme betingelser som beskrevet ovenfor.
