Titel 1 Evil

Evil (eksamensemne)
We have looked at different definitions of evil and worked with the associated vocabulary. We have looked at reasons for the evil behavior of the many characters we have met discussing whether it has been caused by nature or nurture and whether the character is to be considered evil or sick. When working with Macbeth we also work with literary devices such as metaphors, similes, personification, symbolism (imagery), during this theme we have worked with the importance of word choice and style of language.

Titel 2 American Values and Beliefs

American Values and Beliefs  (eksamensemne)
We have worked with materials (mostly non-fiction) which made it possible to talk about the six traditional American Values  (individual freedom and self-reliance, equality of opportunity and competition, material wealth and  hard work ) and the American Dream, as well as some of the following topics/keywords relevant to American culture, especially at the moment:

• Politics - Republicans/Conservative values versus Democrats/progressive and liberal values.
• Abortion
• Religion
• Race and Gender ("Woke" movement)
• Patriotism
• American exceptionalism and Manifest destiny
• The frontier Heritage

We have worked with the six traditional values and the historical reasons behind them. We have analysed non-fiction texts using the rhetorical pentagon and Toulmin’s model of argumentation (especially Toulmin’s model when working with the abortion debate)

Titel 3 Multicultural Britain-The Windrush Generation

Multicultural Britain – The Windrush Generation (eksamensemne)

After looking at definitions of what imperialism and colonialism are, the students have briefly looked into the extent of the British Empire and into British Imperialism, in order to get an idea of how the British Empire has played a role in shaping the current multicultural British society. This means that the students have acquired some knowledge about aspects of British colonial history, but especially about the historical and social conditions of British citizens with a Caribbean background, since we have focused on the Windrush Generation. To do this we have analysed and interpreted literature which gave the students and impression of the Caribbean immigrant experience and of the identity issues experienced by the descendants of the Windrush generation. We also explored the Windrush Myth and the Windrush Scandal.

Titel 4 Impressions of War

Impressions of War (eksamensemne)
During this theme we have explored how participating in two different wars has been portrayed in fiction. First, we worked with World War I from a British perspective focusing on how the view on the war changed from portraying participation in the war as heroic and patriotic at the beginning of the war to a more disillusioned portrayal. In this context we analysed poems (written by the war poets) and recruitment posters.
Next we worked with a war important to American Society since it ended up dividing the American Public.  We explored how participating in the Vietnam War has been portrayed in literature and film.
Finally, the students participated in a lecture about "The US Warrior in Fiction, Film and Photography. " (10/3-2026, v/Thomas Ærvold Bjerre) – The topics covered in the lecture were: The traditional US warrior and new aspects/themes relevant to the US warrior of today such as drone warfare and drone fighters + women soldiers. The students finished off the theme by writing an analytical essay about a short story with a female drone operator as the main character.

Titel 5 Global English-from a postcolonial perspective

Global English – from a postcolonial perspective (eksamensemne)

English culture and the English language came into contact with a wide range of cultures and languages as the British Empire grew larger and larger. As the English colonized many areas of the world, their culture and language became the dominant one, placing indigenous and minority cultures and languages at the bottom of the social and cultural hierarchy. Literature from England’s former colonies often deals with the legacy of a colonial history. We focus on colonial and postcolonial literature from the Caribbean, India and Oceania.
We have also talked about the two dispersals of English to understand the different ways in which English has become an important language outside of England and as a Lingua Franca. English used as a Lingua Franca has also been mentioned, for instance, when talking about how Robinson Crusoe and Friday communicate, English used in India as Lingua Franca along with Hindi because they speak many different languages + when the students communicated with 11 Mexican students when they worked with “Robinson Crusoe.”
Post-colonial Theory/Criticism has been introduced to show the students how to approach literature using a type of theory especially relevant to this kind of literature. We have looked at literature written by both the colonizers and by postcolonial writers. Important PC terms have been: internalization, appropriation, centre/periphery, hybridity, writing back at the centre, colonize/decolonize the mind, perpetuate the colonial mindset, representation, Orientalism: the other/othering, us vs them dichotomy, etc.
