The Cult of Celebrity
This introductory short course explored the concept of fame, tracing its development from historical contexts to the digital age. We examined how the definition of fame has evolved, particularly in light of the internet and social media's impact.
Through a variety of genres—including fiction, podcast, documentary, and visual art—we investigated how fame is portrayed and perceived. A central figure in our exploration is Andy Warhol, who famously anticipated contemporary fame culture. The course encouraged the students to reflect on both societal and personal understandings of fame, as well as the implications of new fame dynamics on social media platforms.
Key terms and concepts include:
Fame, famous, fans, fandom, influencer, follower, stalker, icon.

Land of the Free and Home of the Brave (eksamen)
The course explored the opioid crisis in the U.S. through a combination of factual texts, testimonies, and discussions. We examined the socio-economic background, the role of the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries, and the consequences for individuals and society.
A central focus of the course was the human cost. We worked with real-life accounts and testimonies from victims and witnesses and discussed the fine line between pain relief and addiction. We explored the effects of opioids on the body and how patients can become addicted—often through legal prescriptions.
In the final part of the course, we discussed the legal and political aftermath: Who is to blame? Which individuals and companies have been held accountable, and what have the consequences been? The course concluded with a broader debate on responsibility—whether the real culprit is the system, the culture, or specific actors.
Key themes included addiction vs. treatment, legal responsibility, and systemic failure. Relevant vocabulary included opioid, pain relief, big pharma, overdose, prescription, and pseudoaddiction.

True Crime (eksamen)
This course focused on "True Crime" as a genre and a cultural, literary, and media phenomenon that explores real-life crimes and their impact on society.
Through articles, podcasts, literary texts, music, and documentaries, we examined how crime stories are constructed and consumed in different formats. Also why they are so popular today.
The course began with a general introduction to the genre, its appeal, and ethical implications.
We established a key vocabulary and concepts f.x crime narrative structure, victim and perpetrator perspectives, and the tension between fact and storytelling.
We worked both with historical and contemporary examples, including classic murder ballads and more modern like Dolly Parton’s reflections on “sad songs”. To understand how true crime can be found in literary texts, we worked with Charles Dickens’ reflections on public executions and Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood.
A more modern focus was audio storytelling in the form of the podcast: Serial and In the Dark, analyzing narration, bias, and investigative methods.
Through the study of the true crime series "The Staircase", we focused on the presentation of guilt, media framing, and the unreliable narrator.
Key vocabulary included terms such as reasonable doubt, alibi, confession, bias, motive, forensic evidence, criminal justice system, documentary, victimhood, and narrative framing.

English - as a Global Language (eksamen)
What is the history of the English language and how does it work in the world today. Who uses English as a way of communicating and who has developed their own regional variation?
How can language be power and create a hierarchy among nationalities in the EU.
The focus in this course is the the evolution of the English language from its early roots to its modern form. The transition from Old English, a blend of Latin, French, German, and Scandinavian influences, to Middle English all the way to modern English.
Another focus is he historical context of language barriers and the diverse people groups shaping English, including Celts, Welsh, and Anglo-Saxons.
Also the role of English within the European Union is examined and questioned whether it will maintain its global dominance as a Lingua Franca.
A key figure such as David Crystal is studied for his contributions to the History of English language , including the Inkhorn controversy and the discussions on Lingua Franca.
Furthermore we look at the origins of words, tracing them back to Shakespearean times and exploring borrowings from other languages like Danish.
Furthermore, we compared American English to British English, noting differences in vocabulary, meaning, and pronunciation. Through this exploration, we gained insights into the dynamic nature of English as a global language.
