Worlds of English; English as a Global Language
English as a Global Language
Engelsk er mange forskellige ting. Kan man tale om en form som den bedste og eneste acceptabel? I dette forløb vil vi analysere forskellige eksempler af fiktion i form af korte tekster. Vi basere temaet fortrinnsvis på bogen Global English. Finderup og Fog. Systime 2010. Den indledende kapitel bruges, men fokus er på engelsk produktion i de tidligere del af det engelske imperiet.
Forløbet er fokuseret på, hvordan England som imperium i 1800-tallet har påvirket resten af verden, med særligt fokus på Indien og andre tidligere kolonier. Hvordan kom de til at bruge sproget og til at beskrive hvad?
Vi ser filmen Monsoon Wedding. En forholdsvis moderne film med eksempler af 'Hinglish'. Et blandingssprog talt i den Indiske borgerskab.

Australia
In this part of the course, we will look at the Land Down Under. We will look at both from the point of view of the white people who came looking for something and the native aboriginals who stayed trying to preserve something., In all, we have 10 modules to do this. We will look at the history of the country from colonisation and forward. we will try to examine the future of the country and the way it has been formed by the immediate past.
The texts we will use combine songs, film and both non-fiction and fiction.

India and the White Tiger
In this them we will deal with two tasks. One is to look at the English-speaking world outside of the Anglo Saxon world. This means looking at a place where English is spoken as a mother tongue, but which is not the United Kingdom or the United States.
It may be something of a stretch to say that India speaks English as a mother tongue as there are 50 different languages and 500 different dialects, but India contributes to the development of English as a former colony and as an independent and independent form. The need to bridge the gaps between the different local languages has led to English domination in education and strange hybrid forms of language. Hinglish - a variant spoken by the middle and upper classes in Delhi is a mixture if Hindi and English. we saw a variant of this in the first theme we did in the film Monsoon Wedding).
The other task we will deal with is to read a whole novel. We will read The White Tiger. a book about modern India and the changes that it faces. This is a novel about the injustices of modern india and the violent and radical steps that are needed to overcome tradition and embrace modernity. As the writer has a very negative view of modern India we will look at a somewhat more optimistic view in the textbook we will be using.

Hemingway and the Lost Generation
Literære tema.
Efter første verdenskrig var der en bevægelse blandt amerikanske forfatter at opgive det moderne i Amerika og flytte til Europa i søgen efter det man kunne kalde for 'en løsning' til de problemer som livet under demokrati og industrialisering fremelsket.
Vi ser på digt med T S Eliot og Ezra Pound. Vi ser en moderne filmatisering af F Scott Fitzgerald's hovedværk 'The Great Gatsby'. The Gatsby undersøger den amerikanske drøm i Amerika i 1920erne.
Slutteligt ser vi på Ernest Hemingway og hans minimalistisk kort fiktion. Hemingway er formentlig den største af de amerikanske forfatter - i hvert fald i det 20. århundrede. I forløbet ser vi til dels på forfatteren og sit liv. Vi ser på vigtigheden af hans liv som journalist og hvordan det har påvirket hans skrivestil.
Vi ser på hvordan hans livsopfattelse og livsførelse kan ses i hans forfatterskab med hensyn til hans valg af tema. Vi ser også på hvordan han bruger minimalimen til at tvinge læseren til at investere i fiktionen for at kunne forstå det der bliver skrevet.

Britain and Brexit
In this theme we will examine Great Britain as a political, geographical and social entity. The reason for this is in order the way Britain is governed and how this has led to the highly controversial decision to leave the European Union in Brexit in 2016.
In order to do this we will read part of a text book on Being British for background information about Britain, we will also use the textbook Divided Britain. for an understanding of phenomenon Brexit. we will examine the points if view represented in the remain and leave campaigns represented in speeches by the (then) Prime Minister David Cameron and the future prime minister Boris Johnson. We will examine a documentary on the economic effects of Brexit. Finally, we will see the film Brexit: The Uncivil War with Benedict Cumberbatch.
