This course focuses on American Politics, society and culture with a bit of history thrown in. The course puts special emphasis on political rhetoric and the analysis thereof. Current events shape what we work with as we follow developments in the 2025 US election which unfolds as the class progresses.

Fantasy and Fantastic Worlds
This course focuses on fantasy and its characteristics as a genre. It touches on fantasy theory by Joseph Campbell and seeks to apply it to famous fantasy texts. The students themselves participate in a competition inspired by the house tournament in Harry Potter, blurring the line between classrood and material. Finally, the course uses the British roots of "Harry Potter" and "The Hobbit" to make a few remarks on British history and society.

Shitstorms
What is a shitstorm? Why do they happen and what can be done about them?
The course focuses on apology and apologia. What are the strategies that a person, country or company can employ when they need to defend, or apologize for, their actions?
Along the way, students are introduced to an analytical vocabulary specific to apology and apologia: kairos, evasion, mortification etc.
Material will be primarily focused on British society, specifically shitstorms affecting politcal figures and members of the royal family. We will discuss core British values and how they affect both public outrage and apology strategies.
Students will end the course by making their own apology videos, showcasing what they have learned.

Horror
This course will focus on horror as a genre, with a particular focus on Stephen King and H.P. Lovecraft's definitions of what horror is and does. A number of concepts for use in analysis have been introduced and there is a brief review of the genre's history. The texts are both short stories, clips and films. Methodologically, there is a focus on literature analysis and film analysis.

This theme looks 100 years back in time to the year 1925. We will focus what life was like at the time of "the lost generation", and learn about a world still in the shadows of the first world war, though the hedonism of the jazz age acted as a welcome release. Ahead in the distance, the great derpression and the rise of nazi Germany looms.
Our material will mostly be literature published during the year, as well as more modern movies remagining the period. Minimalism, early chicklit and stream of consciousness all feature.
