Titel 1 The Vietnam War

The Vietnam War is one of the most extensive and brutal wars since World War II. It took place from 1961 to 1975 and cost millions of lives – soldiers on both sides and many civilians.

The war played a central role in the balance of power during the Cold War, between communist North Vietnam, supported by the Soviet Union and China, on the one hand, and the South Vietnamese government and the United States on the other.

The Vietnam War has also been called the last free "television war": Reporters on the battlefield filmed the fighting, and the violent images created great uproar and protest demonstrations at home in the United States and in the rest of the world.

The conflict became a huge national trauma for America, which ended up as the losing party in a conflict with a poor third world country.

This  course on the Vietnam War at English A-level is highly valuable for Danish 3rd-year students, because it combines historical insight with the study of influential literature, speeches, and media from an important period of the 20th century.

Titel 2 Crime in fiction

This course explores the captivating world of crime fiction. From the classic detective novels to gritty modern thrillers.
Students will investigate how crime is portrayed in literature, examining novels and short stories that span the genre’s evolution from its 19th-century origins to contemporary works. We will trace the development of key tropes, such as the brilliant detective, the criminal mastermind, and the noir antihero, and also compare the stylistic and thematic differences between British and American crime fiction. Through close reading, discussion, analysis and creative writing exercises, students will gain a deeper understanding of the genre’s narrative techniques, historical context, and its reflection of societal fears and values.

Titel 3 Life under fire: The Blitz

This course on the Blitz in London in 1940 offers a unique window into a defining moment of British history and identity.

Between September 1940 and May 1941, London and other British cities endured sustained bombing by Nazi Germany, aiming to break the nation’s morale and force surrender. Instead, the Blitz became a symbol of resilience and unity, with the “Blitz spirit” shaping British identity for decades.

It also transformed everyday life altering work, family roles, and city landscapes while leaving a lasting cultural legacy in literature, film, and collective memory.

Studying the Blitz reveals not only the human cost of war but also how adversity can forge solidarity and redefine national character.

Through diaries, memoirs, historical accounts, and literature, we will explore how ordinary people endured extraordinary hardship.

The topic links language learning with cultural history, providing insight into wartime society, propaganda, and also national morale, while reflecting on themes of courage, community, and the human cost of conflict. These are issues still deeply relevant today.

Titel 4 Pop Culture

Pop Culture as a term became mainstream during the 1980s, and it refers to the thoughts, ideas, music, films, and entertainment preferred by the general people.

Studying pop culture as part of English enables us to explore how language, structure, and representation combine to create meaning.

Texts such as song lyrics, screenplays, news headlines, advertising slogans, and digital media can be analysed using the same critical methods applied to novels or poetry, including close textual analysis, interpretation, and theoretical approaches.

Ideas such as representation, ideology, audience, and power allow us to examine not just what pop culture communicates, but the ways in which those messages are constructed and the reasons behind them.

This course encourages an active and questioning engagement with pop culture rather than passive consumption. We take an analytical stance on several aspects because we, as audience do not simply receive pop culture messages; they interpret, negotiate, and sometimes resist them.

By analysing these interactions, you will strengthen the analytical and critical skills that are central to A-level English and valuable beyond the classroom.
