Knowledge and the knower
This theme serves as an introduction to TOK as a subject. We consider the impact of values, perception, bias and technology on the production, acquisition and communication of knowledge. Three different types of knowledge (propositional, experiental and practical) are introduced and worked on. We will then proceed to consider the question of whether some things cannot be known. This question is approached through different perspectives facilitated by different sources. Groups present their work.
The theme also gives students an opportunity to reflect on the role of generative-AI in the production of knowledge, and through the question: Does Chat-GPT know? we develop a deeper of understanding of the components involved the definition of knowledge as justified true belief.
Finally, the theme invites students to consider the ethical ramifications of knowledge production/acquisition.

Optional theme: Knowledge and politics
In this theme we consider the different interactions between knowledge and politics. Throughout we have a particular focus on the dialectic between power and knowledge. How can knowledge be empowering? How can power affect knowledge? In connection to this we introduce a distinction between different conceptions of power:: Sovereign power and normalizing power. While sovereign power can impact knowledge production through propaganda, censorship and legal means, normalizing power impacts knowledge production by regulating the discourses and concepts we use to produce, acquire and communicate knowledge.
To exemplify the impact of politics on knowledge production, we watch the documentary "The merchants of doubt". This serves as an example of how political interests directly regulate and manipulate the communication of knowledge.
As an example of how the production is affected by normalizing power we read an excerpt of Stephen Jay Gould's Mismeasure of Man.

AOK: Mathematics
We work on mathematics as an AOK. We first consider how the schools of Platonism and nominalism give rise to essentially different conceptions of mathematics, both in terms of its ontology and epistemology. Afterwards we consider the method of mathematics. The theme also invites students to engage in the generation of knowledge questions, reflections based on such questions and the process of peer feedback based on such questions.

Knowledge and language
In this theme we reflect on the interdependent between knowledge and language. We define language as a collection of signs, and introduce the distinction between signifiers and signified to substantiate this definition. This leads us to a variety of questions that we entertain throughout this theme:: Does knowledge essentially depend on language? Or is there knowledge that does not? Can only humans have knowledge? The second question is answered by introducing a distinction between forms of communication and language proper. We identify three properties that a form of communication should have for it to be classified as a language.
The theme also invites us to reconsider the relationship between language and power, by looking at how the construction of particular uses of language shape the way we (can) talk about things, and thus the knowledge we can hold about these things..

AOK: Arts
We consider art as an AOK. We look at the role of perspective, value, and interpretation in producing knowledge in the arts. Moreover, we consider the role of taste. In this regard we introduce the distinction of high/low and good/bad taste, and consider how these distinctions be used to construct a particular understanding of groups of consumers of art.

Cooperative modules with STX: Bullshit
We put our knowledge politics, language and knowledge to the test in these cooperative modules seeking to understand the peculiar way that Donald Trump uses language. In this regard we introduce the philosophical concept of bullshit, and discuss the implicit commitments that we make when we are having honest and valid conversations with each other. How are these commitments violated by bullshitters?
We then ask: Is Trump a bullshitter? And why is bullshitting such a dangerous use of language in public and political discourse.
