Short films
In this course, we will be working with short films (mostly), and we will discuss how films can be approached like literary texts (e.g. by looking at characters, relationships, conflicts, setting, themes and message) and how to analyze cinematic techniques (such as framing, editing, lighting, angles and sound). In all the films we work with, one of the main characters undergo significant development; thus, character development is a key theme in the course.
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
• analyse characters in film using the STEAL model of characterization, and comment on their development
• analyse other elements that we know from fiction analysis (character, relationships, conflict, setting, themes, message)
• use knowledge of cinematic techniques (framing, colours, sound, editing, angles) to analyse a short film
• comment on the development in characters. What causes the main characters to change?
Keywords: STEAL, cinematic techniques such as framing, editing, lighting, angles, and sound, development, main character, relationships, conflict, setting, structure, symbols, theme, message.
