Northern Ireland
A quick trip to Northern Ireland to start off our year. Most text deal with various aspects of The Troubles. Basic info to start, followed by articles ('Troubles tourism': should Derry be celebrating its political murals? from The Guardian, songlyrics (Sunday, Bloody Sunday (U2 and O'Connor's "This is a Rebel Song" , a movie (Belfast, Brannagh, 2021 and short stories, "Good Girl" (Conlon McKenna) "No Angel" (McGill, 2011). A speech by Thatcher was looked at, as well as various sources on Northern Ireland's connection to Brexit. We also included Swift´s "A Modest Proposal"

Fitzgerald´s "The Great Gatsby" was our primary focus when looking at the 1920s in the US. The Jazz age. As an introduction to the theme a few presentations were given to gain knowledge of the timeperiod, aided by a documentary (The Century: America's Time - 1920-1929: Boom To Bust - youtube)

Shakespeare - Romeo&Juliet
We studied the bacony scene, the tomb-scene and the first kiss scene from Shakespeare´s Romeo&Juliet + a few sonetts (18, 29, 130, 138) - 100% focus on the writings of the great bard. We started the theme by looking at the lay of the land during the Elizabethan era. All documents found on lectio.

By the help of Kaalund et al.´s "Boomerang, we've taken a look at the land downunder, statrting with the ontro-pages from "Boomerang"
We've focused on a few subthemes- nature, colonial history and its effect on the country and its peoples, and finally the story of Ned Kelly.
We´ve done so by looking at the following texts:
"Advance Australia Fair" Dodds McCormick) "Tracks" (Davidson), In a Sunburned Country" (Bryson), The Redfern Speech" (Keating), "Took the Children Away" (Roach), "No Longer Tied to Britain..." (Melleuish)
In addition, we studied the short story "You are Here" (Milton), and we've watched the movie "The Kelly Gang" (Kurzel, 2019)

Your homework is to write down minimum 10 words that you think of when you hear "Australia" No googling.

We'll revisit yesterday´s text and see what you found most important. Today´s class deals with your findings, and music (and grammar- so bring both books)

For today, please read the excerpt from "Tracks" (pp31-38) and work with the questions related to the text. Upload answers under elevfeedback. Feel free to collaborate, but remember to include the name of your partner on top of your document.

No homework. In class we'll complete "pre-reading tasks 2 and 3 on page 41, and then we'll work with "In a Sunburned Country" (pp 42-51).

Grammar: read up on the passive voice (Minlæring). And complete the exercises in the homework-link. Make sure you write down examples and things that are troublesome. In class we'll continue where we left off last time.
