FORLØBET

Teksterne i forløbet fokuserer på selviscenesættelse, og hvordan der kan være en uoverensstemmelse mellem den, man virkelig er, og den man opfører sig som i visse sammenhænge. Eleverne udstyres med termer til at beskrive selviscenesættelse fra Goffmans teori om front stage og back stage, og det står centralt, at eleverne kan anvende disse termer i arbejdet med teksterne. Eleverne vil derudover arbejde med analyse af "short stories" med fokus på de virkemidler, der kan bruges til at iscenesætte sig selv som fx "setting" eller "narrative technique". De centrale termer til emnet er: Front stage, back stage, face, props, costumes, character, setting, first person narrator, unreliable narrator.

Et andet fokus i emnet er at introducere eleverne til skrivning af "analytical essays", som består af tre dele: "Introduction, analysis paragraphs og conclusion". Eleverne skal vide, hvordan en "analysis paragraph" opbygges ved hjælp af "the PEE-model", og hvordan man skriver en "introduction" med en "thesis statement", som der senere samles op på i essayets "conclusion".

Titel 2 Black Lives in the USA and 'The Hate U Give'

Forløbet præsenterer eleverne for den historiske kontekst for sorte amerikaneres selvforståelse og plads i samfundet i dag.

Som opstart skal eleverne i mindre grupper lave en mundtlig præsentation for resten af klassen om et nedslag i de sortes historie fra slaveriet til #BlackLivesMatter-bevægelsen. Eleverne arbejder også med dokumentaren '13' om retssystemet og race i USA. Derefter arbejdes der med med rap tekster, der læses som eksempler på digtgenren med fokus på race og identitet.

Herefter begynder arbejdet med romanen The Hate U Give. Læsningen af romanen fokuserer indledningsvis på characters, setting and language, og senere især måden hovedpersonen navigerer mellem to forskellige verdener på: hendes hjem i Garden Heights og privatskolen Williamson Prep. Undervejs i forløbet foldes forskellige aspekter af de sorte amerikaneres selvforståelse og virkelighed i dagens USA ud, og eleverne skal bl.a. arbejde med code-switching, #BlackLivesMatter, police brutality og the Ferguson Riots.

Arbejdet med romanen har til formål dels at træne elevernes læsehastighed dels deres close-reading skills.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course has aimed to introduce students to analysis of non-fiction texts. We have worked with which terms to use in an analysis of non-fiction texts and examined the use of rhetorical devices in several speeches. The intention has been to equip students with the necessary tools to write essays on non-fiction in the written exam.

Our focus has been how language and rhetorical devices can be used to persuade someone to change their mind. It is essential that students are able to not just identify which rhetorical devices are used, but also analyse their effect and how they are related to the different corners of the rhetorical pentagon. How does e.g. the use of an antithesis help express the speaker's intention?

Forløbet har til formål at dække læreplanens krav om, at du introduceres til "historiske og aktuelle forhold i andre engelsksprogede regioner [end Storbritannien og USA]". Fokus er det nutidige Indien.

Du skal have en basal baggrundsviden om Indien som moderne demokrati og de problematikker, der følger med i relation til religion, kaste og kønsroller. Er Indien et demokratisk samfund? Pointen med denne baggrundsviden er, at du skal kunne anvende den til at opnå dybere forståelse af de konflikter, der berøres i de læste tekster og dermed "perspektivere tekster kulturelt, samfundsmæssigt og historisk".

Undervejs i forløbet arbejder vi med indere som minoritet i USA i novellen 'A Temporary Matter'.

Forløbet handler om britisk identitet og de splittelser, der udfordrer ideen om en fælles britisk identitet i kølvandet på Brexit. Forløbet har derfor til formål at undersøge, hvordan britiske tekster skildrer britisk selvforståelse; er "United Kingdom" virkelig en samlet nation eller opdelt på tværs af klasse, uddannelse og kulturel baggrund?

Formålet er at give eleverne en baggrundsviden om det britiske samfund og hvordan den britiske velfærdsstat adskiller sig fra den danske, samt hvilken betydning det har for dem, der er på samfundets bund. Eleverne introduceres til en række termer, som kan bruges til at karakterisere det britiske velfærdssamfund, og det står central at eleverne kan anvende disse termer i forbindelse med tekstanalyse og dermed sætte teksterne i et samfundsmæssigt perspektiv.

This course focuses on non-fiction and introduces students to key developments in journalistic writing such as literary journalism and narrative non-fiction. Non-fiction texts are per definition based on facts, but as opposed to traditional journalism, the texts in this topic explore subjective points of view and the writers' personal takes on reality.
We are going to be working with genres such as personal essays, articles and a podcast. Students are expected to be able to identify the characteristics of narrative non-fiction when analysing a text as well as utilizing terms relevant to non-fiction analysis in general.

Key characteristics of narrative non-fiction:

- Structure, narrative "hook", use of personal anecdotes/scenes

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This topic is an introduction to the values that shape American society. The topic begins by describing the values that have shaped America historically since the Declaration of Indenpendence, and it then moves to the Trascendendalist movement (1830 - 1860) and studies how texts from this literary movement explore what it means to be American. Finally, the topic moves to the present day and focuses on the presidential election. This part of the topic covers the major political parties, and how politicians appeal to core American values in their campaigns. Analyzing speeches is an integral part of studying American elections, and this means that rhetorical analysis will be a partiuclar focus in this topic.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The topic deals with postcolonial literature and how identity is shaped through the stories we tell. One text is written from a British colonial perspective ('The White Man's Burden') and forms a contrast to the modern texts which are written by writers from former British colonies in Africa ('Naija Brit', 'How to write about Africa', 'The Danger of a Single Story').

The focus of the course is aimed at how postcolonial nations and postcolonial literature in general seek ”to describe the interactions between European nations and the peoples they colonized” and how postcolonial literature in various ways deals with how ”colonialism has influenced the lives and mindsets of the colonizers as well as the colonized ” (quotes from "Africa Unfold"). The course includes an introduction to English as a lingua franca.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This topic focuses on man's relationship with nature in both a modern and historical context. In the beginning of the topic, we are going to focus on climate change and the individual's emotional responses to the changes happening in nature and how climate change can cause e.g. anxiety and pessimism.

The modern texts on climate change will form contrasts to texts from the Romantic Age century where nature is seen as a place to comfort. We are going to look at Romanticism as a literary movement and the role of nature in Wordsworth's poetry.
