Horror fiction and crime stories
Course Description:
We dive into the chilling world of horror fiction through the lens of the short story, where we focus on suspense, dread, and the supernatural.
The course explores iconic and unsettling tales, e.g. Stephen King’s “Quitters, Inc.,” a darkly satirical take on compulsion, and “The Cat from Hell,” a gruesome nightmare. Also, Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart,” a psychological descent into guilt and madness; and William Sleator’s “The Elevator,” a claustrophobic thriller of paranoia.
The reading will expand your exploration of horror’s diverse themes and styles. Through close reading, discussion, and analysis, you will examine how these works use narrative techniques, atmosphere, and psychological depth to evoke fear and probe human nature.
Key questions include: What makes a story horrifying? How do cultural and historical contexts shape terror?
Learning Outcomes:
- Analyze narrative techniques (e.g., unreliable narrators, pacing, imagery) in horror short stories.
- Identify and compare themes such as guilt, paranoia, and the supernatural across texts.
- Explore the cultural and psychological underpinnings of horror fiction.
- Develop critical reading and discussion skills through written reflections and group dialogue.
Course Format:
Sessions include:
* instructor-led discussions
* student presentations
* and short writing assignments. (Such as creative writing based on pictures)
Duration: 8 weeks

Southern United States Literature
Southern literature, also known as the literature of the American South, is defined as American literature about the Southern United States or by writers from this region.
We will focus on the distinctive features of Southern literature, such as the role and significance of the family, the sense of community and one’s role within it, the sense of justice, and finally, the dominant religion, Christianity.
Also, we will listen to variations in the American dialects, including BAE. During this course, the students will assess their understanding of Flannery O’Connor’s short stories ("A Good Man is Hard to Find," "Good Country People," "Revelation") and Eudora Welty’s "A Visit of Charity," focusing on literary analysis, thematic interpretation, grammar, and descriptive writing skills.
Again, the main focus is to develop analytical skills and to be able to assess a text from different angles.

Hemingway and modernism
In this course, we have the term "Modernism" in focus: Exploring Hemingway’s Short Stories
Course Description:
You will learn about modernist literature through an introductory text on modernism and a closer look at some of Ernest Hemingway’s minimalist masterpieces. This course begins with a brief overview of modernist themes—alienation, fragmentation, and the search for meaning in a changing world—setting the stage for close readings of Hemingway’s "Hills Like White Elephants," a tense dialogue revealing unspoken tensions; "Indian Camp," a stark exploration of life and death; "Cat in the Rain," a subtle study of longing; "The Doctor and the Doctor’s Wife," and finally a look at domestic and cultural conflicts in "The Sea Change,"
We will look at technical terms such as Hemingway’s iceberg theory, sparse prose, and psychological depth, exploring how these stories reflect modernist matters.
Through discussions and written reflections, we’ll address questions like: How does Hemingway convey meaning through what is left unsaid? How do these stories capture the "modernist mood"?
Learning Outcomes:
- Understand key characteristics of modernist literature and their application in Hemingway’s work.
- Analyze Hemingway’s narrative techniques, including minimalism and subtext.
- Explore themes of alienation, gender, and identity in the selected stories.
- Develop skills in close reading, critical discussion, and textual analysis.

Postmodernism and feminism
Postmodernism: Reading Paul Auster’s City of Glass
Course Description:
We will use Auster's novel as an example of a novel that blends detective fiction, metafiction, and existential inquiry.
The course will explore the entire text, read partly in class through guided discussions and partly independently, to uncover hallmark features of postmodern writing: fragmented narratives, unreliable narrators, intertextuality, and the concealing of reality and fiction.
By following Daniel Quinn, a writer turned detective, you will analyze how Auster deconstructs identity, authorship, and meaning in an urban landscape.
Key questions include: How does City of Glass challenge traditional storytelling? What does its self-reflexivity reveal about the nature of narrative? Through close reading, discussion, and supplementary texts on postmodern theory, students will engage with Auster’s innovative style and its cultural significance.
Learning Outcomes:
*To identify and analyze postmodern techniques such as metafiction, pastiche, and narrative instability.
*To explore themes of identity, authorship, and urban alienation in the novel.
*To understand the broader context of postmodernism in late 20th-century literature.
*To develop skills in close reading, critical discussion, and analytical writing.

Man and nature
Course Title: "Man and Nature" Here, we are exploring human connections with the nature
Description:
This course examines the complex relationship between humanity and the natural environment through a literary and cinematic lens.
You will explore themes of ecological impact, personal transformation, and the search for meaning in nature.
Ray Bradbury’s "A Sound of Thunder" deals with the consequences of human interference with nature’s delicate balance, highlighting the fragility of ecosystems.
The excerpt of Henry David Thoreau’s "Walden" offers a reflective exploration of simplicity, self-reliance, and the spiritual rewards of living in harmony with the natural world.
Jack Kerouac’s "Big Sur" portrays a raw, introspective struggle with nature’s overwhelming power and its role in confronting personal and existential crises.
Complementing these readings, the film "Into the Wild" (directed by Sean Penn) provides a modern narrative of one man’s radical quest for freedom and authenticity in the wilderness, raising questions about idealism, survival, and the cost of rejecting civilization. Through close reading, discussion, and critical analysis, students will investigate how these works challenge societal norms, and nature’s profound influence on the human spirit. The course encourages the students to reflect on their own relationship with the environment and consider the ethical implications of human actions in an increasingly fragile world.

Modern technology and AI: A threat to democracy?
This course explores the impact of modern technology and artificial intelligence (AI) on society, drawing from a diverse set of texts, including Ray Bradbury’s "There Will Come Soft Rains," "The Veldt," and "Fahrenheit 451,"
Also, contemporary articles such as "AI—The good, the bad, and the scary," "AI in Schools: Pros and Cons," and "The myth of Meta’s free speech places democracy at risk." Through critical reading, discussion, and analysis, students will examine the promises and dangers of technological advancement, focusing on AI’s role in shaping human behavior, ethics, and global issues.
Topics include AI’s potential to enhance education and innovation, its risks to privacy and democracy, and speculative visions of technology’s future, as depicted in dystopian literature and current debates, such as those surrounding Meta’s fact-checking policies and geopolitical tensions in articles like "What if China Invades? For Taiwan, a TV Show Raises Tough Questions."
You will engage in group presentations, such as those modeled by individual groups' analysis of Bradbury’s works ("The Veldt" and "Fahrenheit 451") and explore real-world implications through case studies, like the study on teenage girls’ interactions with technology. By blending literary analysis with contemporary issues, the course encourages students to critically evaluate the ethical, social, and cultural dimensions of AI and technology in today’s world.
Learning Objectives:
*Analyze the societal and ethical implications of AI and technology through literature and current events.
*Evaluate the benefits and risks of AI in education, governance, and daily life.
*Develop critical thinking and communication skills through group discussions and presentations.
*Connect speculative fiction to real-world technological trends and challenges.
