The Renaissance
The topic was the first part of an investigation into the European Renaissance as a period of cultural change, leading to the reformation, and the North European Renaissance, being a consequence of that. The topic introduced new theory, such as Actor/structure relationship, Causality, Normative reasoning, Historical Mentality and Historical Materialism. We also focused on alternative sources, such as art and literature as historical remnants.
Besides the textbook 'Western Civilization: a Brief History' , sources used included:
-'The Prince' by Nicolo Machiavelli (the students worked in groups with self-selected chapters from the book)
-Excerpts from the first and last canto of 'Inferno' by Dante Alighieri
-Examples of art from Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, Michelangelo, Raphael, Van Eick, Donatello.
