The Viking Age
Our first topic was an investigation into the Scandinavian Viking age.
The focus of the topic was concerned with the nature of the Viking Age as a historical era between the Iron age and the Middle ages, contra the period's role in our cultural collective consciousness.
The topic introduced the students to the basic principles of source analysis, while also detailing the concepts common consciousness.
This latter concept was also further expanded upon, in the class' DHO, in collaboration with Danish-class.

-Excerpts from the elder and the younger eddas
-Widukind and Adam of Bremen about the Christianization of Denmark
-Adam of Bremen about the Disáblot Rituals in Uppsala
-Ibn Fadlan about the Rus Vikings and their funeral ceremonies

The Reformation
The second half of the topic, which concerned the reformation, focused on the theoretical reasons for changes as mentioned above. We moved from Martin Luther in Germany to the reformation in Denmark and how the Northern Renaissance was a consequence of that. Finally we ended the topic with a brief view on the witch hunts that resulted from the Northern Renaissance.

The Great War
This topic was about the First World War, the actors and structures that led to the event, and the long reaching concequences of the war on a global scale. The material and sources for the topic were mainly accessed through the online ressource: www.firstworldwar.com. Besides that, we saw the film 'All Quiet on the Western Front' (1930) and at the end of the topic, we saw episode 1 of the documentary 'WWII in Colors'.
The focus points were:
-How did the war begin? -Actors, structures, isms and alliances
-Nationalism and preparations for war
-Strategies and Trench warfare
-Life in the trenches
-Major battles on the Western front
-Consequences: The Russian Revolution
-Consequences: American involvement and rise as superpower
-Consequences: Versailles and the fall of Germany

The Enlightenment
The final topic returned to where we left off after the North European Renaissance. Based mostly on chapters from 'Western Civilization: a Brief History', the topic introduced Enlightenment as a continuous period and a rebellion against structures from the past.
The main focus of the topic also included an individual, innovative assignment, where the students should use their analytical skills and the toolbox to make a presentation on a self chosen Philosphe, and through him or her, represent the essences, problems and ideals of the period.
