Titel 9 Welfare state, labour market and challenges

Welfare State, Labour Market and Challenges

This course examines the structure and challenges of the Danish welfare state in the context of globalization, demographic change, and political reform. Students analyze models of welfare provision, citizenship, and labour market dynamics, with a focus on Denmark’s transition from welfare to competition state.

We work with both theoretical frameworks and real-world policy issues such as declining fertility rates, recruitment difficulties in the public sector, and immigration’s role in supporting welfare finances. Concepts such as Baumol’s cost disease, globalization, and active labour market policy are introduced and discussed.

Key materials and tools include:

    Open Up Society (Columbus)

Articles (e.g. Kristeligt Dagblad interview with Ove K. Pedersen)

    Small Great Nation report (Kraka/Deloitte)

    TV2 article on migrant labour

SRP-aligned writing tools (OneNote, memos, analytical notes)

The course concludes with student presentations, data interpretation exercises, and reflective discussion on the sustainability of the welfare model.

Titel 10 Forløb#11 US Election 24

U.S. Election 2024

This course provides an in-depth look at the 2024 U.S. presidential election, combining political theory with case-based and comparative analysis. Students explore voter behaviour, campaign strategy, party politics, electoral systems, and the role of swing states.

The course blends empirical data, media coverage, political science theory, and practical simulations. Students work with comparison charts, case studies of specific states, interactive maps, and debates. The use of the comparative method and key IR/political science terms (e.g. swing states, types of voters, party identification) is emphasised throughout.

Main materials and tools include:

    Election in America (PDF)

    Types of voters (PDF)

    Rachel Bitecofer interview (Salon.com)

    Trump analysis (Politiken, DR podcast)

    270toWin interactive electoral map

Quizlet, OneNote, Forms, and peer presentations

Statistical and sociological data on voter turnout and restrictions

Students deliver short presentations, complete written assignments (comparison-based), and take part in election night analysis and simulation.

Titel 12 Forløb#13 Challenges to Democracy 1

Challenges to Democracy

This course explores the rising challenges to liberal democracy in the 21st century, with a focus on populism, autocracy, and threats to constitutional checks and balances — including the impact of Donald Trump on American democracy. The course investigates both structural and cultural threats to democratic norms, including disengagement, anti-citizenship, and declining trust in institutions.

Students work with theoretical texts (Habermas, Koch, Ross, Applebaum, Müller), sociological analysis (Aydin Soei), and current political commentary. Key democratic concepts include deliberative democracy, the rule of law, and the role of “the good citizen” in sustaining democratic systems.

Main materials and methods include:

    Open Up Society, selected chapters

Key themes include the consequences of Trump's tariff policies, central bank independence, global supply chains, and the winners and losers of globalization (e.g. Milanovic’s “Elephant Curve”). We also focus on the role of the EU in Denmark’s economic growth, labour market challenges, and demographic issues such as pension reform and workforce shortages.

Core content and tools:

Trade theory (Ricardian model, comparative advantage)

Trump’s economic policies and Fed conflicts

    Quantitative easing and inflation control

    Economic outlooks (Nationalbanken, DØR)

Articles from BBC, CNBC, DR, and The Guardian
