3: Creative Writing
The students have been introduced to creative writing where they will stay loyal to genre conventions and add literary devices themselves instead of just detecting them when doing textual analysis.
The students have rewritten/remediated the "Banquette scene" into various genres: short story, rap, news article.
Also, they have attended a work shop on creative writing coducted by Irish writer Fergal O'Byrne who introduced them to writing good shorts stories and screen plays.
In groups, they pitched ideas for a catchy short story that they later on wrote in class.
In the end, the students presented their short stories to one another.

4: Men and Masculinity (EXAM)
The topic explores the concept of masculinity in contemporary culture using the students' own definition of manhood/manliness as a starting point. The students explored these ideas in an individual writing task and a subsequent group discussion taking the starting point in their individual writings.
Free writing sessions have been an important part of this topic.
"The Mask of Masculinity" | by Wade Davis | TEDxUF was the first text explored and focuses on what it means to be homosexual in the world of American sports/athletics. Public speaking and how the speaker comes across to the audience and his use of rhetorical devices was a major focal point.
Select passages from "The Miseducation of the American boy" by Peggy Orenstein, The Atlantic, 2020 were explored and discussed in class. The text focuses on the development of American masculinity and the history of masculinity in the West.
We have worked with Ernest Hemingway's short story, "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber". The students have made group presentations on various aspects of the novel. We have worked with Hemingway's minimalistic writing style and his use of "the tip of the iceberg" technique.
We rounded off the topic with the film, "The Power of the Dog", 2021. The students made group presentations in class based practising film analysism, public speaking and putting the film into perspective to the rest of the topic and other topics studied in class.
Speech analysis, short story analysis, film analysis, as well as public speaking and the students' ability to give feedback to other groups and expressing their own ideas on the topic have been central to this theme.
