Titel 1 Dystopian fiction

We will explore the genre of dystopian fiction, a genre which has become quite the go-to genre of our times. After taking a closer look at its main characteristics, we will study a number of texts that explore different dystopian themes and look at the appeal of the genre for modern readers.

Objectives

o to analyze and interpret a selection of texts that explore various dystopian themes
o to understand the immense popularity of the genre

Titel 2 The African-American Experience

For this theme, we will explore the theme of race in America - past and present. After taking a closer look at African American history, we will turn our attention to race issues of today. Over the last couple of years, the issue of race has once again become front-page news in America. The controversial shooting of black teenager Trayvon Martin in 2012 and the subsequent acquittal (efterfølgende frikendelse) of the white shooter were followed by several other fatal shootings of black Americans. These incidents have highlighted the race issues that continue to exist in America and led to the formation of the movement Black Lives Matter as well as other acts of social protest, e.g. National Football League players refusing to stand for the national anthem before kickoff.

Goals:
o Learning about African American history
o Trying to make sense of what is going on in America today concerning race and race relations
o Analyzing a selection of texts that deal with race and race relations
o Learning key vocabulary

We will learn about the origins and characteristics of Britain’s multicultural society, the different attitudes toward it, and the connection between multiculturalism and Britain’s decision to leave the European Union (Brexit).
