The texts for this theme deal with becoming who we are. What factors influence personality? The people you are going to read about tell us about events, beliefs, challenges and choices that formed their personalities. They're not famous, they're not geniuses, they're not unique - they are, in many ways, just like you and me. But their stories of how they became THEM might make you think about what makes you YOU.

For this theme we will explore the genre of dystopian fiction, a genre that has become immensely popular in recent years.

After taking a closer look at main characteristics of the genre, we will study a number of texts that explore various dystopian themes and look at the appeal of the genre for modern readers.

Objectives
- to become familiar with the concepts of utopia and dystopia
- to analyze and interpret a selection of texts that explore various dystopian themes
- to understand the popularity of the genre
- to study traditional American values and beliefs
- to learn key vocabulary such as utopia, dystopia, Big Brother, surveillance, totalitarian, dehumanization, ideology, free will, propaganda, etc.
