The texts in this topic all hold examples of someone or something twisted.
The topic also introduces you to analyzing and interpreting texts belonging to the genres fiction and non-fiction.
Thus, the aim is to help you achieve the basic analytical skills that you can use henceforward every time you work with a written text.

Central terms you are expected to know by the end of the topic:
Analysis, genre, interpretation, quotations, theme, message, point of view, character, atmosphere/mood, setting, implicit meaning/explicit meaning as well as the forms of appeal (pathos, logos and ethos).

In this topic about Great Britain, we will take a closer look at Britain, the British empire and British identity with focus on different shapes of diversity, such as class, race and cultural background. One focus point is the experience of Caribbean immigrants coming home to Britain, the mother country, to work. We will look at how this is expressed in literature with focus on the so-called ‘hostile environment’ campaign and the Windrush scandal (2018).
Another focus point is the contrast between social classes in Britain and the power celebrities hold, in Britain.
Finally we have looked into how English became a global language, and is a lingua franca today and how dialects/sociolects seem to matter in the UK because it is perceived as a marker of social class.

Important terms:
The legacy of the British Empire, imperialism, colonization, decolonization, immigration, class, inequality, social heritage/social mobility, class differences, diversity, dialect, sociolect, code-switching,English as lingua franca and global English, a homogeneous society vs. a multicultural society, sense of belonging, the Windrush generation, ‘hostile environment’, the Windrush scandal, casual racism vs. institutionalized/structural racism, and celebrity endorsement.

Kompetencer:
- overveje engelsk som 'the language of the colonizer' og hvilke konsekvenser det kan have for 'the colonized'.

This topic focuses on South Africa, both from a historical perspective, looking back at the apartheid era, but also from a social perspective, as a nation divided today because of economic inequality, among other things.

We start out with background information about apartheid and what it was like to grow up in South Africa as a black or a colored person. By reading a few chapters from Trevor Noah's personal memoir, 'Born a Crime', we will look into the theme 'identity struggle' in a country dominated by segregation and apartheid but also explore how comedy and humor can be used to fight racial injustice and bias.

We will also take a closer look at Nelson Mandela’s wish to create a rainbow nation as the first black president and through analysis of the film ‘Invictus’, we will focus on the 1995 Rugby World Cup and the role sports can play in bringing a country together.

Central terms you are expected to know by the end of the topic:
- colonization, colonized, colonizer
- apartheid, institutionalized racism
- Afrikaans (the language) and Afrikaner (South African people of Dutch descent)
- the Immorality Act, 1927
- The Soweto massacre, 1976
- Passbooks
- The National Party
- ANC (African National Congress)
- the use of the term 'rainbow nation'
- humor as a literary tool to humanize difficult or abstract topics and humor as a way to create comic relief and connect with readers (devices such as exaggeration, ironic truth, anecdotes, wordplay, one-liners and satire).

EMNET HÆNGER SAMMEN MED EMNET OM 'OF MICE AND MEN' OG TILSAMMEN SIGER DE NOGET OM 'DREAMS AND VISIONS OF AMERICA'.

We will explore the concept of the American dream based on Truslow Adams’ definition from 1931 and we will follow aspects of the dream from Steinbeck’s ‘Of Mice and Men’ up (1937) up until US election 2024. Our focus will be how the concept of the American dream still plays a role in modern day politics and ideology in the US. What do the two major parties represent, who are they and how do they try to attract voters. We will work with rhetorical analysis of speeches and look into which issues seem to be the most important ones in this election and its outcome.
Students have done research on, and presented in class, products related to the two political parties, important issues in the election, campaign ads as well as lyrics about the American Dream.

Central terms for the topic:
- How the system works: The two main parties (Republicans and Democrats), their beliefs, the election system, the electoral college, supreme court and the importance of swing states.
- Analysis terms used to analyze campaign-ads and speeches: Forms of appeal, type of ad, primary/secondary audience, circumstances (rhetorical pentagon) and cinematic techniques used.
- American values often pointed to in speeches, through allusions, metaphors etc.

The objective of the topic:
-To gain knowledge about the paradox of horror, - why do we seek out horror entertainment when it scares us?
-To gain knowledge about different approaches to horror. Should horror be seen and read as a mirror of the human psyche, a mirror of society or a mirror of human nature?
-To gain knowledge about Stephen King’s three kinds of horror (terror, horror and gross-out)
-To become aware of typical horror devices in texts and film: gothic settings, dramatic irony, foreshadowing, build-up of suspense, climax, unreliable narrators, plot twists, use of imagery… and cinematic devices such as jump scares, framing, lighting, angle, sound…
