US Election and great speeches - EKSAMEN
This topic was, not surprisingly, in relation to the 2024 presidential election in the US. We focused on the American political system, including:
- Republicans and Democrats and the two party structure
- Election system: primaries, winner-takes-all, swing states, Electoral College and electors, etc.
- Government: House of Representatives and Senate. Three branches of government and checks and balances.
Also we worked with the actual election. The candidates, their background, policies and rhetoric. We analysed the convention speeches of both candidates.
In addition to the election, the theme also focused on rhetorical analysis and we worked with great speeches out of the context of the (at the time) ongoing election.
Material/texts:
- Donald Trump RNC Acceptence speech (2024)
- Kamela Harris DNC speech (2024)
- Being American Chapter 2 and 3 by Mette Holm, Systime (2020).
Group work (1 group, 1 speech)
- Emmeline Pankhurst, Freedom or Death, 1913
- Malcolm X, The Ballot or the bullet (excerpt) 1964
- Martin Luther King, I have a Dream (excerpt) 1963
- Jimmy Reid, Inauguration as rector of Glasgow University, 1972
- Malala Yousafzai, Nobel Peace Prizre acceptamce speech, 2014

Modern Myths - EKSAMEN
In this theme, we started by establishing what a myth is, what its function is, which elements it usually consists of and how it is structured. Afterwards we read and watched modern works of fiction based on classical myths (mostly greek mythology). We compared and contrasted the modern retelling or adaption with the original story and discussed the meaning of the myth in a contemporary context.
Theory:
- Definition and function (cosmological. pedagogical, social, etc.)
- Archetypes (antagonist, helper, ruler, hero, sidekick, magician, seer, etc.)
- The structure of a myth (home-away-home, the portal, the tests, the quest, etc.
Texts:
- Popular Mechanics by Raymond Carver (1977) - based on Kong Solomon Myth
- O Brother, Where Art Thou by the Coen Brothers (2000) - based on Homer's The Odyssey
- Minotaur by Peter Ho Davies (2005) - based on the Minotaur myth
- The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood (2005) - also based on The odyssey, but from Penelope's perspective.

Lingua Franca (mini theme) EKSAMEN
A very short topic on English as the world's Lingua Franca.
We looked at:
- the role and history of English in the European Union
- a proejct called "dialectsarchive", that has documented English accents and dialects in countries around the world by having people read aloud from the same text.
- Malala Yousafzai's nobel peace prize acceptance speech - again.
We talked about:
- What the consequences of having English as global Lingua Franca are
- Difference between dialect and accent
- The Danish accent and what is particularly hard for Danish speakers of English.
- The difference between expressing yourself in your native language and in your second language.
