Global English
This course looks at how the English language has changed over time, starting from Old English and finally to the way we speak English today. Students learn about the history, important events, and changes in grammar and vocabulary that shaped the language.
We also explore how English became a global language, used by people all over the world to communicate. A key part of the course is understanding the idea of lingua franca—a common language used between people who speak different native languages. We study Kachru’s Three Circles Model, which shows how English is used in different parts of the world: by native speakers, second-language speakers, and learners.
In connection to this, students watched and analyzed the movie "Bend It Like Beckham" to explore how English is used as a lingua franca in multicultural settings. The film helped highlight how language connects people from different backgrounds and how identity and communication are shaped by global English.
Another focus is on the many accents and varieties of English spoken around the world, such as British, American, Australian, Indian, and African English. Students listen to and compare these accents to understand how English sounds different depending on where it’s spoken.
The course ended in a group discussion about the future of English.

Aspects of Britain
Course Description:
As the continuation of the previous course "Global English", this course explores different sides of British culture, history, and identity through a variety of literary texts. Students read and discuss works that reflect Britain’s colonial past, multicultural society, and national symbols.
Key texts include:
"The White Man’s Burden" – a poem that shows how colonialism was justified and viewed by Western powers.
"Karma" by Khushwant Singh – a short story that looks at British influence in India and how it affected personal identity and social status.
"Therapeutic Exercise with the Union Jack" – a satirical piece that examines British patriotism and national pride.
"Lisbeth" – a story that offers insight into the life of an Indian hill girl, brought up by the British. The story depicts topics like culture clash and identity issues.
Through these texts, students discuss themes such as colonialism, identity, multiculturalism, and British traditions. The course encourages critical thinking about how Britain is seen both from within and from outside, and how its past continues to shape its present.

Graphic Fiction

I forløbet berører vi fortællemæssige karakteristika og begreber såsom "The Iceberg Technique" og den emblematiske floskel "show it, don't tell it".
Ernest Hemingway: "Hills Like White Elephants" (1927), "A Very Short Story" (1925).
Raymond Carver: "Neighbors" (1971) , "They're Not Your Husband" (1973), samt "Prose as Architecture" (1987).
