Sports' culture in the US (Exam)
This is a non-fictional theme about culture in sports in the US.
We will look at thematics such as:
- The view of amateur and pro-athletes as a commodity, not a human with rights, needs or values.
- Feminine ideals VS "male" sports.
- The corrupting power of money in sports.
- The value of having atheletes to idolize that represent you/your culture.
The students learn to use and understand the following terminology:
- Appeal: ethos, pathos and logos
- Rhetorical pentagram: message/intention, topic, writer/sender/speaker, audience/receiver, circumstances, language.
The students have done a small project and presentation in relation to this topic, where they have found their own sources.
Presentation ~8-10 mins containing:
1.Introduction to your angle
2.Non-fictional analysis of one key source (at least 3 focus points. Ex. appeal, audience/receiver, message)
3.Conclusion.

Irish Myths and Legends (Exam)
Irish Myths and Legends
This theme focuses on the older history, mythology and legends of Ireland. In order to gain an understanding of Irish traditions, culture, values and historical background prior to the English rule. This is our non-UK and non-US theme as it does not relate to Northern Ireland but rather to the very specific history, mythology and culture of Ireland prior to the British Invasion (the succesful one).
We have explored the mythological creatures of Irish folk tales such as banshees, druids, witches, fairies etc. We have learned the legend of Queen Maeve and the bulls of Cooley and we have looked at the history of Ireland from 100-1625 where the English had established Henry VIII as King of Ireland (1541) and he dismissed parliament, thereby ruined the tribal system, which had consequences for the Tudors in terms of unrest and rebellion.
