Titel 1 1.g Rhetoric and communication

Theoretical course introducing production- and analysis of non-fiction texts. Elements such as the history of rhetoric, the rhetorical pentagram/rhetorical analysis and non-verbal communication are explored.

Part of the course focuses on a rhetorical analysis of Michelle Obama's speech, 'The Power of Education' (2013).

Also, we have spent time solving grammar tasks and learning about the analytical essay in English on MinLæring (www.minlaering.dk).

American ideals, values, and federal history.

What characterises an American (if this is at all possible to state exactly), how is the American Dream perceived and experienced by different people, what are the cornerstones of the American Constitution?
The course also includes an analysis of Joyner Lucas' song, 'I'm Not Racist' as well as presentations/analyses of self-chosen songs/music videos linked to the theme.

Titel 3 1.g The British Empire / Multicultural Britain

We will start from texts from and about the legacy of the British Empire. Also, this course focuses on English-speaking culture in a globalised world as well as cultural meetings- and clashes. In this regard, we will discuss whether British colonisation was mainly a positive or negative era in world history. Our text-analytical focus is on characterisation, setting, theme, and message. Finally, lingua franca is reflected upon in a colonial and global context.

Titel 4 2.g. Sports and Politics

This course focuses on the relationship between sports and politics, paying special attention to social activism and political propaganda. Key elements in the course are Colin Kaepernick's taking-a-knee-action, the Caster Semenya case and political- and social activism in connection to the Olympic Games. Also, we will look into the history of the Olympic Games, sportsmanship and sports ethics.

Titel 5 2.g. Climate and fossil fuels in the US (TF3)

Cross curricular course with geography, thus the Danish description of the course.

Grøn omstilling i USA: Viden om det amerikanske politiske system (incl. state legislation in esp. Montana) samt om det politiske landskab anno 2023, undersøgelse af amerikanernes syn på klimaforandringer, redegørelse og analyse af casen ‘The Montana Youth vs. The State of Montana’ (2023) og et overblik over amerikanernes brug af fossile brændsler (økonomi, beskæftigelse, udledning).
Med udgangspunkt i den indsamlede viden har vi kigget på forskellige interessenter og politikeres argumenter i debatten og i klassen forberedt argumenter (Toulmin) til en klimadebat i en amerikansk kontekst (på engelsk).

(Forløbets indhold NG: Viden om energiforbruget Danmark, USA og globalt, samt andelen af fossile brændsler i hhv. den danske og amerikanske energiforsyning.
Generel viden om olie-, kul- og gasdannelse, olieudvinding og begrebet forsyningssikkerhed. Vi har derudover kigget på alternativer til de fossile brændsler i en amerikansk kontekst.)

How is it decided who is to serve in the Oval Office? We will become acquainted with the general election process.
Getting to know the presidential candidates and their political positions on key issues; the economy, immigration and abortion legislation.
Exit polls - what are the predictions before election day?
The outcome / rhetorical analysis of Kamala Harris' concession speech / future predictions.
Voting tendencies both in the US and on a global scale, including the global political divide between young men and women.

Refresh: What is ‘an American’ and which ideals and values form American society?
The three branches of government on federal-, state- and local level, incl. checks and balances.

Titel 10 4.g. Technology and human relations

This course explores the impact of technology on human relations. We will read and watch even more dystopian literature/productions, where technology is a key theme. We will watch 'The Social Dilemma', collect data on our own SoMe usage, learn about algorithms and the tech companies' business models, as well as the students have to produce podcasts, which serve the purpose of raising young people's awareness in regard to digital empowerment.

The theoretical knowledge that the students were presented to in the previous Utopia/dystopia course is applicable also to this topic.

The first fleet arrived in Australia in 1788, marking the beginning of tumultuous era in Australian history. In this context the students have examined Aboriginal history and culture, British colonisation of the indigenous peoples' sacred land, The Stolen Generations and intergenerational trauma, and post-colinial writing. Also, the students have discussed and explored how Australia should deal with the past to create a better future.
