English as a Lingua Franca
This topic took a brief look at global English; English as a lingua franca.
English is unique in that it is the first truly global lingua franca. No other language has ever enjoyed the same degree of reach and assimilation. Almost sixty sovereign states designate English as one of their official languages and it’s the most studied language in the world. Business, government, and science hold great influence over the evolution of language. Exceptional command of the English language features in the skillset of world-class translators and interpreters. And nearly every kind of professional needs at least a basic level of English training. We explored the steps that led up to the adoption of English as a new international language.

Abortion in the U.S. (EXAM TOPIC)
This topic looked at the controversy surrounding abortion laws in the U.S. in the light of the recent Supreme Court decision to reverse Roe v Wade. We began by learning about the history of abortion in the U.S. with the help of educational videos. We watched the Netflix documentary ‘Reversing Roe’ to gain insight into the current situation in the U.S.. We then looked at the ways abortion can affect the women involved through study of two short stories. We also looked at the arguments for and against abortion, analysing campaign videos and speeches by Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

Northern Ireland
This topic looked at the Troubles ) in Northern Ireland (1968-1998). We looked at the history of Ireland and of Ulster in particular. We examined the causes of the conflict and then saw the film 'Bloody Sunday.' We looked at the ways the conflict has impacted on other communities in the U.K., studying the bitter, sectarian rivalry between the two Glasgow football clubs in Scotland - Celtic and Rangers - and the anti-sectarian bill (The Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012).

Gender Issues (EXAM TOPIC)
This topic looked at gender issues in English speaking countries and cultures, touching on perceptions of gender roles, changing perceptions of gender identity, and the problem of toxic masculinity. We began by watching the film 'Barbie' and reading articles that praised and criticised it. We discussed the extent to which it can be understood as a feminist film. The topic also focussed on gender attitudes in contemporary Australia, reflected in the works of writer Tim Winton and in the documentary film 'Hotel Coolgardie', which followed the fortunes of two Scandinavian girls backpacking in Western Australia.

The Collector (EXAM TOPIC)
In this topic we studied the novel 'The Collector' by British author John Fowles. We did a close-reading of the work in aquarium groups with a concluding seminar. We used new criticism and ideological criticism when working with the text, identifying the genre (psychological thriller) and examining character, narration, conflict, theme etc.. We placed the novel within the context of the period in which it was written (Britain of the 1960s), understanding it also as an example of post-modern fiction and metafiction.

Romanticism and the Romantics (EXAM TOPIC)
This topic looked at Romanticism and the Romantics through the art and literature of the period. We tried to understand the impulse behind the Romantic movement in Europe and in Britain by identifying its defining characteristics and distinguishing features. We studied the literary and aesthetic currents of Romanticism in their socio-historical context. We saw Romanticism as a reaction to the rationalism of the Enlightenment, and the neo-classicism of the Augustan Age. We analysed and interpreted poems by Blake, Wordsworth, Shelley, Byron, Keats and paintings by Wright of Derby and Caspar Friedrich, and discussed the shared sensibilities, beliefs and ideas of the Romantic Movement.
CORE MATERIAL:
Wright of Derby, ‘Experiment on a Bird in an Air-pump’ (painting)
Caspar David Friedrich, ‘Wanderer above the Sea of Fog’ (painting)
William Blake, ‘The Tyger’
William Wordsworth, 'Daffodils'

Shakespeare's 'Othello' (EXAM TOPIC)
This topic ran over several lessons. We began by examining the Renaissance in Europe and the Elizabethan era in Britain among other things, by studying ‘The Ambassadors’ by Hans Holbein. We learned about Shakespeare's life, times, and works. We familiarised ourselves with Shakespearean language by analysing sonnet XVIII and reading John Donne’s ‘The Flea’. Once we were familiar with the language, we moved on to read 'Othello' in its entirety, analysing the play in depth in a series of presentations and discussions in aquarium groups and a final seminar. We approached the text with the help of new critical analysis and ideological criticism focussing on dramaturgy, conflict, character, theme and language.
