We watched and discussed the presidential debate on ABC News. We tracked, analysed and discussed opinion polls leading up to the election and analysed and discussed the final results. We studied speeches by the candidates, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, and read articles and reports that shed light on their respective campaigns.

Titel 2 Northern Ireland (EXAM TOPIC)

Northern Ireland

This topic looked at the Troubles in Northern Ireland (1968-1998) with the help of non-fiction and fiction. We looked at the history of Ireland and of Ulster in particular. We examined the causes of the conflict and then saw the film 'Bloody Sunday.' We looked at the ways the conflict has impacted on communities in the province and other communities in the U.K., studying the bitter sectarian rivalry between the two Glasgow football clubs in Scotland - Celtic and Rangers - and the anti-sectarian bill (The Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012).

Titel 3 Gender Issues (EXAM TOPIC)

This topic looked at gender issues in English speaking countries and cultures (U.S.A., Australia and the U.K.) touching on perceptions of gender roles, changing perceptions of gender identity, and the problem of toxic masculinity. We began by watching the film 'Barbie' and reading articles that praised and criticised it. We discussed the extent to which it can be understood as a feminist film. The topic also focussed on gender attitudes in contemporary Australia, reflected in the works of writer Tim Winton and in the documentary film 'Hotel Coolgardie', which followed the fortunes of two Scandinavian girls backpacking in Western Australia. We also looked at the issue of transgenderism.

Titel 4 Lord of the Flies (EXAM TOPIC)

This topic involved a thorough-going analysis and interpretation of William Golding's novel ‘Lord of the Flies'. We read the work in its entirety, placing it first briefly within the tradition of utopian and dystopian fiction. We then focussed on the problem of evil in the novel and the psychological mechanisms at work in the various characters and the dynamic within the group. We approached the novel with the help of new critical analysis and ideological criticism, focussing on setting, character, conflict, theme, symbolism and message, and the insight the novel gives us into the values, norms and power relations governing society in the postwar era in the United Kingdom.

Titel 6 Culture Clashes in Colonial India (EXAM TOPIC)

This topic examined the relations between the colonialists and those colonised during the period of British rule in India. We did this chiefly through the study of literature written by those who experienced colonialism on the Indian sub-continent first hand, both from the point of view of the British and the Indians. The topic touched on the topic of Indian independence, and some elementary background in postcolonialism and postcolonial literature.
