Gender Issues (EXAM TOPIC)
This topic looked at gender issues in English speaking countries and cultures (U.S.A., Australia and the U.K.) touching on perceptions of gender roles, changing perceptions of gender identity, and the problem of toxic masculinity. We began by watching the film 'Barbie' and reading articles that praised and criticised it. We discussed the extent to which it can be understood as a feminist film. The topic also focussed on gender attitudes in contemporary Australia, reflected in the works of writer Tim Winton and in the documentary film 'Hotel Coolgardie', which followed the fortunes of two Scandinavian girls backpacking in Western Australia. We also looked at the issue of transgenderism.
