For this theme, the students have worked with the witch as a cultural and literary figure. The theme has focused on how different societies have viewed witches and witchcraft and included an element of literary and social history. From there, the students made their way through Shakesperean witches, the Salem Witch Trials, the view of witchcraft in Dark Romanticism, the Victorian view on witches and witchcraft, the witch in modern society and the witch in contemporary society. The theme has combined theoretical research into the witch with literary representations and focused on how the view of witches in literature, and other works, reflects the gender and social norms of their time.
