Titel 5 Gender Matters! (E)

We will explore different aspects og gender through movies, short stories, non-fiction and a mini project.
Some of the texts, especially the short stories, look at gender in a historical perspective, focusing on the changing attitudes about gender reflected in the texts.
The historical perspective is also applied to the analysis of the Emmeline Pankhurst speech in connection with the Suffragette movement.

Most of the nonfiction texts (speeches, articles, Ted Talks and commercials) discuss gender issues from a contemporary angle with the scope widened to also include areas such as toxic masculinity and heteronormativity. We have also examined how commercials and magazines can shape, but also challenge, our perception of gender roles. This is also the case with Taylor Swift's groundbreaking video 'The Man'.

Materials used:
A webquest about the Sufragette movement

Emmeline Pankhust: Freedom or Death! (Speech)

Titel 6 American Values - past and present (E)

(Forløb planlagt of gennemført af Gry Schæfer)

-The causes of the American Revolution (Acts = laws),
-The Declaration of Independence: Equality, Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness = The American Dream, democracy, and revolution
-The Constitution (preamble, the Bill of Rights = preamble and the first 10 amendments), equality and freedom.
-Manifest Destiny; the New World, the Old World, White supremacy, Providence, missionary.
-Multiculturalism: diversity, the melting pot and the salad bowl
-Race; Reverend Wright’s remarks; inflammatory, division, race issues, need for unity,
-abortion: Roe v. Wade (pro-life or pro-choice)
- Democratic Party vs. Republican Party; Trump and Biden’s political views and key issues: immigration, abortion, climate change, and border control, healthcare.

Titel 7 Couples with troubles - Acing Analysis (E)

During this topic, we will explore how to analyze fiction texts, songs, poetry and films.
A fresh start for those who may still feel a bit lost when confronted with fiction texts and films.

The point of departure will be an analytical model called 'C-style Analysis'.
Here we will revisit the basics:
characterization and character development, conflicts, crises, climax, conclusion etc.
Of course, we will also cover areas such as style of language, symbolism etc.
We have also analyzed music videos.

Focus points:

Digging deeply at word level (reading between the lines) when reading short stories

Different perspectives on relationships - both conventional and unconventional relationships

Focus on linguistic devices (metaphors, symbolism etc.) when reading song lyrics and poetry

Texts read (short stories):
Nick Hornby: Faith
Ranbir Sahota: Chameleon
Anna Davis: Hiding in Cheesy's Bedroom
Kate Vine: Beautiful Things

Nb! The Hemingway short story 'The Sea Change' that we read last year is also relevant for this topic

Music video analysis:
Olivia Rodrigo: Drivers License
Ed Sheeran: The A-team
Pink: Family Portrait

Titel 9 Canada - Friendly neighbour with dark secrets! (E)

During this topic, we will investigate Canada's incredible and tumultuous history; from the first fur traders in the 1600s to our day and age.
We will look at Canada as an immigrant nation, but our main focus will be on the 'first nations' (native people) and how colonization has affected them with special emphasis on the horrific crimes committed against children at the Residential Schools in Canada.

We have also looked into colonial history and the different categories of native peoples.

In the process we have read Michelle Good's novel :'Five Little Indians'.
During our analysis, we have explored the fate of the five protagonists of the novel who are all residential school survivors.
The novel depicts the horrendous abuse and cultural suppression taking place in the schools established by the Canadian government but often run by the Catholic Church.
Main themes:
- Identity and being torn between cultures
- Identity and language (English as a forced lingua franca)
-  prejudice and racism
- Indian spirituality
- abuse (sexual abuse, drugs, alcoholism)
- Love, forgiveness and healing

Material used:

Canada A Story of Us (documentary)

Indigenous Peoples in Canada (website)

Titel 10 Shakespeare's Elizabethan world and Macbeth (E)

During this topic we will explore the Elizabethan World View and how it is reflected in Shakespeare's Macbeth.

Some of the areas we have focused on are:
- The chain of being (social hierarchy)
- Cosmic, divine order in the universe (cosmos vs. chaos)
- free will vs. fate (and temptation)
- witchcraft as a real threat for Elizabethans
- Power struggles and unhinged ambition
- loyalty vs. betrayal
- Gender roles (including the dynamics and development of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth)
- Shakespeare's language (prose vs. verse, blank verse of iambic pentameter etc.)
- Symbolism and metaphorical language (imagery)
- Different stage and film versions of the play (Judy Dench etc.)

We have done in-depth analysis of the following parts of the play:
Act 1, scene 5 (Lady Macbeth's Unsex Me soliloquy)
Act 1, scene 7 (Lady Macbeth scolding Macbeth for his lack of courage and manliness)
Act 3, scenes 1 + 4 (Macbeth soliloquy + raving madness in front of the noblemen)
Act 4, scene 1 (The witches' brew...Double, double toil and trouble'.)
Act 5, scene 1 (Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking scene)
Act 5, scene 5 (Macbeth's final soliloquy...Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow)

The plot of the rest of the play has been covered via summaries from 'The Royal Shakespeare company' + various YouTube guides.

We have also watched large chunks of the Globe's performance of the play filmed in 2013
