Couples with troubles - Acing Analysis (E)
During this introductory topic, we will explore how to analyze fiction texts, songs, poetry and films.
A fresh start for those who may feel a bit lost when confronted with fiction texts and teachers with a not-so-hidden love for (over)interpretation ;-)
The point of departure will be an analytical model called 'C-style Analysis'.
Here we will revisit the basics:
characterization and character development, conflicts, crises, climax, conclusion etc.
Of course, we will also cover areas such as style of language, symbolism etc. and we will look at Hemingway's writing style compared to other writers (The Iceberg Method)
We have also analyzed music videos + a poem.
Texts read (short stories):
Nick Hornby: Faith
Ernest Hemingway: The Sea Change
Ranbir Sahota: Chameleon
Anna Davis: Hiding in Cheesy's Bedroom
Kate Vine: Beautiful Things
Music video analysis:
Olivia Rodrigo: Drivers License
Ed Sheeran: The A-team
Pink: Family Portrait
J. Cole: Love Yorz
(Nb! You are only expected to be able to relate to the song that you analyzed)
Poem:
Carol Ann Duffy: Valentine
Film: Love, Simon

Who will be POTUS?
During this topic we will look at the American election and the main election issues. It's a completely new ball game with Kamala Harris' status as the nominee of the Democratic party.
We will look at the seemingly strange election system, the demographics of the USA and its significance.
Focus will be on the analysis of nonfiction texts, for example the TV-debates between Harris and Trump.
A short topic conducted in connection with the election. Can be seen in relation to the topic about Gatsby and the Roaring Twenties)

Gatsby's 20s: an age of decadence and decay! (E)
We will investigate the so-called 'roaring twenties'. An era of incredible contrasts and wild cultural innovation!
An age of affluence and decadence for those who had the means, but also an era that highlighted the stark class differences and racial borders being challenged through art and music.
In the process we'll be reading the novel ' The Great Gatsby'
Focus points (among others):
Basic knowledge about the roaring twenties:
Societal development, prohibition, consumerism, urbanization, mass media, entertainment, class differences, the stock market boom and crash etc.
In our study of the novel, we have focused on areas such as:
- Nick Carraway and his role as an elusive and unreliable narrator
- Gatsby's ostentatious and lavish parties and façade (appearance vs. reality)
- Class differences: Newly rich vs. Old money (West Egg and East Egg) and The affluence of 'The Eggs compared to 'the Valley of Ashes'.
- The unattainable American Dream (for those without means)
- Gatsby's ambiguity and complexity
- Symbolism! (Green light, TJ Eckleburg, The Valley of Ashes etc.)
In order to understand 'the Roaring Twenties' we have watched ABC's:
The Century: America's Time - 1920-1929: Boom To Bust
Finally, we have watched Baz Luhrman's 2013 adaption of the Great Gatsby and compared its wild postmodern style to the novel

Shakespeare and the Elizabethan World View (E)
During this topic, we will explore the Elizabethan World View and how it is reflected in Shakespeare's Macbeth.
Some of the areas we have focused on are:

- Shakespeare's language (prose vs. verse, blank verse of iambic pentameter etc.)
- Symbolism and metaphorical language (imagery)
- Different stage and film versions of the play (Judy Dench etc.)
We have done in-depth analysis of the following parts of the play:
Act 1, scene 5 (Lady Macbeth's Unsex Me soliloquy)
Act 1, scene 7 (Lady Macbeth scolding Macbeth for his lack of courage and manliness)
Act 3, scenes 1 + 4 (Macbeth soliloquy + raving madness in front of the noblemen)
Act 4, scene 1 (The witches' brew...Double, double toil and trouble'.)
Act 5, scene 1 (Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking scene)
Act 5, scene 5 (Macbeth's final soliloquy...Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow)
The plot of the rest of the play has been covered via summaries from 'The Royal Shakespeare company + various youtube guides.
