EXAM Gender (SRO)
Samarbejde med samfundsfag
Fokus: Engelskfagets metoder
Emne og fokus: Køn i USA + Toxic Masculinity. Hvordan analyseres en tale? Hvordan italesættes køn i USA?
Toxic masculinity is a harmful ‘masculine ideal behaviour’ constructed by the traditional norms of society. Masculinity equals dominance, self-reliance and competition
the consequences for men: men die at a younger age (due to higher risk-taking and lack of willingness to seek help), higher suicide rate,
men are socialised into inflicting violence as they are expected to act tough and powerful -> if they don’t act “tough”, they might be exposed to bullying by other boys/men
men don’t have many spaces to have honest and open conversations
men should reject traditionally feminine behaviors such as showing emotion and accepting help
Teori og analyse: Queer Theory og hvordan en tekst kan læses med det fokus (The little mermaid og Frozen)
Queer theory is a critical theory that examines and critiques society's definitions of gender and sexuality, with the goal of revealing the social and power structures at play in our everyday lives. In particular, queer theory can serve as a lens to examine subjects outside the boundaries of traditional gender and sexuality binaries that assume that heterosexuality and cisgender are "the norm."
An approach to literature/texts that explores how gender and sexuality is socially constructed – defies categories
An approach that reads literature ‘with the knowledge of / opposition to a hetero-normative agenda’
Re-evaluate and re-interpret texts for the purpose of revealing a certain view of gender – e.g. through discourse analysis – ‘how do we talk/write about gender?’

EXAM: Book Club Dystopia
The students have decided on a novel they would like to read within the topic 'Dystopia'.
They work in groups with reading, analysing and interpreting the novel focusing on the characteristics of the genre (propaganda, restriction of freedom, surveillance, living in a dehumanized society, uniform expectations, fear of the outside world etc.).
The reading also focuses on the main protagonist(s) and how she/he often questions the existing political and societal systems as well as the type of control presented in the dystopian world of the novel (corporate, bureaucratic, technological, philosophical/religious) and how this affects the citizens of the society.

EXAM: Minimalism (Carver and Hemingway)
During this course we will look at Minimalism as a style of writing. What characterises minimalism (less is more, show - don't tell, short sentences, simple language, very few adjectives). Minimalism focuses on plot, actions and dialogue. The narrator is often absent or an objective observer. The reader has to be very active in the interpretation (must fill in the blank spaces).
We look at Ernest Hemingway and Raymond Carver as two prominent authors of minimalism. Which topics and types of people did they write about and in which ways do their stories reflect their lives?
Vi snakker om metoder og litterære begreber ift. SRP: Nykritisk metode, biografisk metode, intertextualitet og selvfølgelig characterisation, setting, symbols, themes, message etc.

EXAM: U.S. Presidential Election 2024
We begin by looking at American values, symbols, concepts and documents.
Values: freedom, self-reliance, mobility, idealism, exceptionalism, independence, do-it-yourself spirit, patriotism
Symbols: the American flag Stars and Stripes, the national anthem The Star-Spangled Banner, the Statue of Liberty
Concepts: The Golden Door, the Frontier Heritage, wipe the slate clean,
Documents: The Declaration of Independence and The Constitution
We focus on the understanding of which values and political issues are important to the two parties and how this can be seen in Trump's SuperTuesday speech and Kamala Harris' acceptance speech. We also look at Trump's inaugural speech to see how this differs from the way he normally gives speeches. We also look at style of language in his speech and compare this to an excerpt of Tim Walz' acceptance speech.
Of course, we also follow the election and look at debates, memes, polls etc.
Forløbet bygger videre på Aspects of America - American identity, især med fokus på amerikanske værdier.

EXAM: Macbeth - ambition, power and tyranny
This course will focus on tyranny in Shakespeare's plays and main themes such as ambition and power and how ambition can lead to the downfall of man. We also briefly talk about gender and the different expectations to men and women as regards norms when it comes to ambition.
We focus mainly on Macbeth but we also read a scene from Richard III. We look at the function of a soliloquy and on the literary and linguistic characteristics of Shakespeare's writings with a focus on literary devices (similes, metaphors, imagery, symbols etc.) and language (use of thou, thine etc. + how verbs are conjugated)
The understanding of Shakespeare and his writings has been put into a historical context by reading about the Elizabethan Era (The Golden Age). We focused on living conditions, England's changing role in the world and of course the Elizabethan world picture, including The Great Chain of Being.
Key concepts/terms: The Renaissance, The Great Chain of Being, tragedy, the tragic flaw, the tragic hero, soliloquy, stanza, imagery
Parallels will be drawn to the U.S. Election and Donald Trump.
Primært materiale:

EXAM:"Black and British - the Windrush Generation"
This very brief course focuses on the relationship between the UK and the West Indies and the Black Caribbean people who came to England to help rebuild the nation after WWII.
Firstly, we look very briefly at Britain's colonialisation of the Caribbean islands.
Secondly, we look at the need for a work force in the "mother country" after WWII and how Caribbeans were invited to help rebuild Britain and in that way contributed to Britain’s modernity and prosperity. Who were they, why were they invited to Britain, and how were they received by the British people? We talk about the term "white victim narrative" and the fear of immigrants that the Caribbean people presented to the Brits.
Finally, we look at the Windrush scandal: why did the descendants of the first Windrush immigrants face deportation and why did Theresa May have to apologize to the Windrush generation in the end?
We also look at English as a lingua franca and in particular at the characteristics of Caribbean English as regards pronunciation and grammar and how this can be seen and heard in texts, video and audio clips and songs. Især hvordan verbet 'to be' er udeladt, og hvordan forkerte pronominer anvendes i stedet for andre korrekte pronominer.
Forløbet bygger videre på elevernes kendskab til engelsk som et globalt kommunikationssprog og Lingua France (fra forløbet Global English)
