The course deals with three basic analytic concepts: Narrative, narrator, and character. It gives the students a fundamental grasp of the how's and why's of literary analysis.
The course introduces the following concepts:
NARRATIVE
- Event vs. narrative (a narrative as "a connected sequence of events")
- Fabula vs. sjuzet ("story" vs. "plot")
NARRATOR
- Homodiegetic vs. heterodiegetic narrator
- Focalization (inner/outer/zero)
- The unreliable narrator + James Phelan's three axes of unreliability
