Titel 1 Hip Hop music and BLM

The course begins with a focus on Eminem. Following this, the course focuses on songs by African-American hip hop artists, i.e. Tupac Shakur and Kendrick Lamar, and the connection between Hip Hop music and the Black Lives Matter movement is ultimately explored.

In this short course about the concept of evil we have looked at different definitions of evil and discussed a range of dilemmas which revolve around the concept of evil.

Titel 5 Dead Poets Society (Theme - annual, verbal test)

We have read the novel "Dead Poets Society" and mainly focused on how the themes below are explored in the book:

-Individualism and Anti-conformity.

-Child/parent-relationships, including different perspectives on how to raise children.

-The expression "seize the day" and the significance of poetry; how reading literature can influence people.

On a more specific level we have mainly focused on Welton, i.e. what sort of school it is, and the following characters: Nolan, Mr. Keating and Knox Overstreet.

Neil Perry's relationship with his father was also explored, including the significance of the suicide and the ending of the novel.

Titel 6 US election

Prior to the election we looked at the electoral college, highlights from the Trump Vs. Harris TV debate and the importance of  significant endorsements.

The course was rounded off with an analysis of the result of the election.

Titel 7 The British Empire/Things Fall Apart (EXAM THEME)

The course started off by zooming in on the British Empire, including a focus on the famous expression “the empire where the sun never sets". We also went over aspects such as: colonialism, the role of missionaries and the Commonwealth.

Following this, we read Chinua Achebe’s novel “Things Fall Apart” with a focus on:

-Okonkwo – the main character.
-Ikemefuna, the boy who was given to Umuofia
-Life in a pre-colonial, Nigerian tribe, i.e. the role of religion.
-The role of the missionaries
-The aspect of English as a LINGUA FRANCA and the significance of the very last line in the novel: "The Pacification of the Tribes of the Lower Niger" (the title of the District Commisioner’s book).

Titel 8 Studietursforløb - Cataloniens selvstændighed.

PRODUKTKRAV: 2-4 sider. SKRIVEGRUPPER = jeres værelsesinddeling.

Redegør for opbygning af det politiske system i Spanien - herunder Cataloniens rolle.

Med udgangspunkt i din redegørelse bedes du analysere The Guardian artiklen “Is Catalonia still dreaming of independence from Spain” (2022) med fokus på fremstillingen af Diada-begrebet samt journalistens brug af appelformer.

Afslutningsvis bedes du kort diskutere, hvorfor mange Catalanerne har behov for selvstændighed, og hvorvidt det er realistisk at opnå dette. Inddrag Euronews artiklen “Catalan independence: Five years on from referendum, is there any hope for separatists” (2022), samt evt.  selvvalgt teori og materiale.

Titel 9 SRO med Samfundsfag; ondskab og American Psycho

Der ønskes en redegørelse for det senmoderne samfund med særligt fokus på identitet, ondskab og narcissisme. Inddrag relevant samfundsfaglig teori (1-2 sider)

I forlængelse af redegørelsen ønskes en engelskfaglig analyse, med inddragelse af filmiske virkemidler, af klippene “American Psycho - Business Card Scene” og “Morning Routine - American Psycho”. I forlængelse af dette ønskes en analyse af uddraget ”Killing Child at Zoo” fra American Psycho primært med henblik på at belyse romanens skildring af ondskab. Analysen ønskes afrundet med en vurdering af hvorvidt, der er indikationer på at Patrick Bateman, hovedpersonen i American Psycho, lider af vrangforestillinger; inddrag eksempler fra “Morning Routine”-klippet og “Killing Child at Zoo”-uddraget og perspektivér til The Collider artiklen “is it all in Patrick Bateman’s Head in ‘American Psycho’”. (ca. 3-4 sider)

Dernæst ønskes en analyse af, hvordan den senmoderne ondskab adskiller sig fra moderne ondskab. Inddrag samfundsfaglig teori og empiri. ( ca 1,5 side)

Diskutér, hvorvidt ”American Psycho” giver et realistisk billede af de negative konsekvenser ved udviklingen i det senmoderne samfund. Og i hvilket omfang det senmoderne samfund producerer en bestemt form for ondskab. Inddrag samfundsfaglig teori og empiri om ondskab. (ca. 2 sider).

Titel 10 Jamaica (EXAM THEME)

Initially, the commonwealth was covered very briefly: The Commonwealth consists of 53 countries, and it was created when the colonization stopped, so almost all countries in the Commonwealth are former British colonies. The countries in the Commonwealth are independent and have their own language: Jamaican patois. The concept of the Rastafari-movement and the legacy of the Jamaican legend Bob Marley were also explored.

Afterwards we covered the immigration waves from the Carribean to England. The focus was on immigrants from Jamaica from the 1950s and onward, including the Windrush generation and the Windrush scandal and the subsequent apology by then prime minister Theresa May.

Lastly, we worked with the significance of the district of Brixton in London and the gentrification that this district has experienced in recent years.

Titel 12 Shakespeare (EXAM THEME)

We read the following passages from “Romeo and Juliet”:

-The prologue

-Act one, scene one
-Act one, scene five
-Act two, scene one
-Act three, scene one
-Act five, scene three (until Juliet says, “This is thy sheath; there rust, and let me die”)

In addition to this we also read three Shakespeare sonnets: sonnet 3, 18 and 130.

The students should have a somewhat thorough understanding of the storyline in “Romeo and Juliet”, and, in terms of linguistics, we zoomed in on oxymorons, rhyming couplets and quatrains.

Titel 13 Transcendentalism (EXAM THEME)

The course starts off by zooming in on the philosophical and literary movement transcendentalism, i.e. concepts such self-reliance, nonconformity and solitude.  

We read extracts from "Civil  Disobedience" and "Walden" by Henry David Thoreau, one of the most important writers from the period of transcendentalism.

Furthermore, we read chapter 1 and chapter 18 from the novel "Into the Wild", watched the movie-version of the novel and worked with the soundtrack of the movie. The connection between the period of transcendentalism and the main character of Into the Wild, Christopher McCandless, was established.

Lastly, we worked with the legacy of "Into the Wild" by focusing on tragic cases in which people have died as a result of their fascination with life in the wilderness.

Titel 14 State of the Union (EXAM THEME)

The course starts off by zooming in on the Declaration of Independence and the American Dream. In this context Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sha'carri Richardson were used as case studies for someone who has achieved the American Dream and has an American “Mindset”.

Following this, we zoomed in on modern America as shaped by the Pax Americana-period. Thereafter we focused on how J.D. Vance’s "Hillbilly Elegy" can help explain why Trump was elected. Lastly we focused on Trump; his personality traits, and more specifically, his comments about immigration and the affordability crisis as expressed in his State of the Union.
