Titel 1 India ÅRSPRØVE

In this course we take a look at India, the crown jewel in the British Empire.

We look at short stories, articles, and documentaries that teach us about Indian experiences, culture, traditions and history. The relationship between India and Britain/"the West" is also a running theme.

-India's attitude to arranged marriage is changing. But some say not fast enough (BBC article)
-A Taste of Power (BBC documentary, first 25 minutes)

Titel 2 Speeches ÅRSPRØVE

This course focuses on non-fiction analysis and speeches in particular.

We look at speeches using the rhetorical pentagram that lets us look at Topic, Sender, Receiver, Language, Context, and Intention.

We look at different speech types but focus on great political speeches.

Rhetorical devices: metaphor, personification, antithesis/contrast, alliteration, historical reference, Presidential I, American We, kairos, modes of persuasion (pathos, logos, ethos), and more..

Titel 3 Twisted Tales ÅRSPRØVE

In this course we deal with texts (short films and short stories) that revolve around twists and/or twisted characters. Here twisted means evil, corrupt, depraved.
We focus on plot structure and elements of suspense.

Important terms: dramatic irony, suspense and surprise, film techniques, plot twist, cliffhanger, relatable characters..

PREAMBLE:

The U.S. has been a world leader and superpower since it entered and prevailed in WWII, and it has seen - and overcome, it seems – countless internal conflicts that have threatened to tear the country apart. Now, America seems to be at a defining moment in time, teetering on a knife’s edge that might or might not plunge the country into civil war. How did it come to this?

GUIDING QUESTIONS:
- Has the United states ever been truly United? If so what has held it together? (PAST)

- What historical and contemporary factors have contributed to the cultural and political polarization so obvious in today’s America? (PRESENT)

The students will, in this course familiarise themselves with various texts, including Graphic Novels, that fit within the theme.

The students will be introduced to analysis of Graphic novels/comics with emphasis on drawing contemporary paralels and putting the works into their historical and cultural context.
