Titel 5 The American Presidential Election 2024

2024 er valgår i USA – en begivenhed, der har konsekvenser for resten af verden, og som sætter dagsordenen for de næste mange år. Bliver det Bidens videpræsident, Kamala Harris, eller den republikanske udfordrer, Trump, der indtager det ovale kontor i januar 2025?

Engelsklærerforeningen for Gymnasiet og HF, Erhvervsskolernes Engelsklærerforening, Foreningen af Lærere i Samfundsfag (FALS) og Forlaget Columbus udskriver derfor en elev-konkurrence.

Eleverne skal udarbejde en kampagnevideo som indslag i den amerikanske valgkamp. Afsenderen skal ikke nødvendigvis være en præsidentkandidat. Det kan også være en anden politiker eller andre politiske aktører - f.eks. en interesseorganisation.

Udover deltagelsen i ovenstående kampagneforløb introduceres klassen til det amerikanske valgsystem, de to præsidentkandidater samt de to største partiers kerneområder.

Titel 6 Contemp. black America/"The Hate U give" EKSAMEN

(Forløbet er forlænget på grund af vikar i januar samt grammatik-og skriveøvelser)


This topic deals with the novel "The Hate U give" and contemporary black America.

The novel deals with sixteen-year-old Starr who lives in two worlds: the poor neighbourhood where she was born and raised and her posh high school in the suburbs. The uneasy balance between them is shattered when Starr is the only witness to the fatal shooting of her unarmed best friend, Khalil, by a police officer. Now what Starr says could destroy her community. It could also get her killed. However, she decides to take action in a very unequal fight for blacks rights and justice for blacks in the US.

Main focus: setting, Starr's development, relationships, code switching, systematic racism and police brutality.

The topic takes its starting point in a short introduction to the end of the Civil War, Jim Crow laws and lynchings in the 50s and 60s.
Through the novel, the film adaption of the film, non-fiction texts, song lyrics, a short film, a timeline of police brutality and a speech excerpt, the topic introduces a contemporary America which is still at large very racist, not least in the wake of the murder of George Floyd. Where does this structural racism and police brutality come from and how does it affect the black minority in contemporary US? These are some of the questions the topic has shed a light on and tried to answer/discuss.

Titel 8 The Great Gatsby/The Jazz Age EKSAMENSEMNE

This topic deals with the novel "The Great Gatsby", the Jazz Age and the concept of the American Dream.
Class has read the entire novel and the pivotal points of analysis are:
Characters, narration, setting, imagery, foreshadowings, the frame novel and themes - the overall question being:
Does the American dream exist or is it an unattainable and unwise goal?

As a perspective and elaboration of F. Scott Fitzgerald's work and his time, class has looked into his life as well as the Jazz Age, the 1920's America, the economy and the Wall St. Crash, Music and Fashion, Prohibition, bootlegging and parties.
Furthermore, we have watched Baz Luhrman's film adaption of the novel and discussed similarities and differences in the two versions. Lastly, we have looked into similarities and differences between Trump and Gatsby, their apperance, how wealth (New Money) have made them into who they are respectively and the lack of acceptance by Old Money.

Titel 11 Shakespeare and his worlds EKSAMENSEMNE

This topic gives an introduction to Shakespeare's world including a brief overview of the Elizabethan Age/the Renaissance, the Great Chain of Being, his definition of the tragic hero and the tragedy, as well as an introduction to the sonnet form and Shakespeare’s portrayal of love and the relationship between man and woman. Special attention is paid to Shakespeare’s literary style, language and use of symbolism in ‘Romeo and Juliet’. Selected excerpts from the play are read intensively and compared to Baz Lurhmann’s film version: ‘Romeo + Juliet’.
The topic also includes a podcast assignment on the last pages of the play: Act V, scene 3, line 123-210, focusing on language, poetic devices, the terminology of the tragedy and overall themes of the play.

Moreover, the sonnet and its chacteristics are also introduced by working with sonnets in the play as well as number 18 and 116.

Lastly, a perspective is made to a short excerpt of "Macbeth" and the play's depiction of love/ambition and power. In this relation, "Macbeth's" challenge of order in the Great Chain of Being in relation to "Romeo and Juliet" is examined.
