Of Mice and Men and American values EKSAMENSEMNE
Of Mice and Men and American Values/værklæsning
This topic explores John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men (1937) in relation to American values, the Great Depression, and the concept of the American Dream. Through a combination of literary analysis, historical context, and film study, class has gained a deeper understanding of how Steinbeck’s portrayal of friendship, loneliness, and dreams reflects key aspects of American identity and society.
The purpose of the course is to strengthen the students’ ability to analyze and interpret literary texts in their historical and cultural context. We have reflected on how core American values—such as freedom, equality, and self-reliance—are expressed in the novel.
Moreover, class has read short factual texts about modernism, the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, and John Truslow Adams' definition of the American Dream.
The analytical focus has been a close reading and analysis of Of Mice and Men, exploring key themes such as friendship, loneliness, racism, gender roles, dreams, and moral responsibility. Moreover, we have worked with the use of symbolism, and character development, particularly in the figures of George, Lennie, Curley’s wife, and Crooks.
As a concluding assignment, the students have created a podcast about Of Mice and Men in relation to the current banned books debate via the article: “Call to remove Of Mice and Men from GCSE course” (BBC). Finally, we have made a perspective to modern day America via Bruce Springsteen's song "The Ghost of Tom Joad".
