Forløbet har fokus på autoritarisme og gruppeadfærd med udgangspunkt i værklæsningen af The Wave. Gennem arbejdet med romanen undersøger eleverne, hvordan autoritære bevægelser kan opstå i demokratiske samfund, og hvordan individet påvirkes af socialt pres, lederskab og behovet for at høre til et fællesskab. Værket perspektiveres til nyere amerikanske samfundsforhold med særligt fokus på Trump-æraens politiske retorik og fremvæksten af populistiske og autoritære strømninger.
